SR New Tail Motor Break-in

Last week I was on the web looking for more info on the SR tail motor problems. I came accross this one thread and the guy was talking about the tail motor. He said that he had gone through about 5 of them before he came up with a fix, so far. He said that if you take the new motor and attach a " D " size battery to it and let it run for " 20 Min ", it will break-in, or burn-in, the new motor. He said that he did this to the last new motor that he got and has not lost that motor yet. Has anyone else out there heard, or tried this and does it work. Thanks, Dave

I heard of that too...but I,ve not had any issues ...I would say it can't hurt, of course I would not be taking a motor off just to do this, unless it was new in a box(motor only).

I just put on a new tail motor on my SR and I did a "wet" break in. Some say use distilled water, I used good ole rubbing alcohol since it would evaporate quicker once I was done and not rust the internals.

I got a simple battery box for 2 AA's at Radio shack and soldered the leads to the leads on the new tail motor. Got it spinning and dunked the tail motor in the bottle of alcohol and let it spin for 20 minutes. You could see a small trail of black gunk (carbon from the motor brushes) that ran out the side.

Once installed on the heli, it was noticeably quieter than the previous motor, but time will tell as to how long it lasts. I did a dry break in on my old CX3 extreme motors before I installed them and they are still going strong 2 years later.

The theory behind the process is sound and it gives me a reason to spend more time in the garage tinkering with the helis.

Only been through 2 tail motors in over a year on my SR.

I break them in on the bench, no rotor attached, just bare motor, running on 4 x AA batteries for abut 20 mins, with the odd drop of oil onto the bearing here and there.

Seems to work for me

To clarify my earlier post, mine was also just the bare motor. Nothing gained by spinning the motor with the tail blade on it.

I am told that by breaking a brushed motor in this way you allow the brushes to form inside the motor and it is best done with some type of lubrication and with no "load" on the motor.

I broke in a new tail motor for my SR and 120SR in rubbing alcohol. They both didn't last very long as I later found out it takes all of the grease out of the motor. I did oil both of them before running them. My current SR tail motor I broke in with distilled water. I don't have alot of packs through it as my buddy torpedoed it into his garage floor. Being in some form of liquid negates any sparks or debris coming off the brushes and getting into the motor windings when seating the brushes. Hope this one works out better.

I always wondered how it would work to make a 50/50 mix of alcohol and something like WD-40 to break in the motors. That way it would have some lubrication while breaking it in, or maybe a few drops of light oil instead...just thinking out loud. I always just do a dry break in with out the prop, last one went over 75 flights so I'm not complaining.
