DIY night tail blades
Finally got them done. The tricky part was finding the right size lipos. I got some fairly thin 20mah cells. Somewhat pricey at $5 each.
Thats some thin double sided tape I found. Normal foam mounting tape is much too thick and will disrupt the airflow around the tail blades. Heres a link to those thin 20ma lipos: http://www.jayconsystems.com/product_detail.php?prod_id=288 or on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-7-Volt-Rechargeable-Lithium-Battery-20-mAh-/200742572334?pt=US_Rechargeable_Batteries&hash=ite m2ebd30912e They come with a circuitboard which I think is for low voltage protection or something. I just carefully desoldered it, its dead weight. And some 30mm shrink wrap I used for the 75mm tail blades for the 500. Pretty sure its the right size for 60mm tail blades too since the chord is similar. http://www.ebay.com/itm/30MM-1-18-Flat-Width-Heat-Shrink-Tube-Tubing-4-Feet-200GA-Thick-Battery-/170791208500?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&ha sh=item27c3f30634 I'm going to test fly them even though its daytime. |

I am looking forward to your flight report... that seems like a fair amount of added weight to the tail blades which will add stress to the tail componants.
They will definetely look cool at night!!!

Well it looks like my reach exceeded my grasp on this one. Both of those 20ma lipos ejected on spoolup. I also broke a tail pitch link, stripped out the tail gear and broke the tail pitch slider.
I was barely off the ground and it all happened at once. I even broke my homemade acrylic vertical stabilizer. No biggie on that, I can just cut another one. If I try it again it will be on the 550. It has a full metal tail and is not likely to do much damage. Oh well. |

I've had a good think about it and the only way I'll try again is with some glue that dries rigid but not brittle like CA.
With any combination of double sided tape and shrink wrap there is too much chance of the lipo slipping and causing an unbalanced tail. Or worse, ejecting completely. Looking at the pics you can clearly see the shrink wrap barely covered the south end of the lipo cells. For now I plan to wait for something better. Plonking down $70 for off the shelf tail blades that look dim compared to my DIY main blades doesnt make sense. Maybe someone will make tail blades with a built in lipo cell. |

I saw these batteries in another post I don't know if they are the same ones you are using

I'm considering trying again with the 550 and using epoxy and shrink tube to secure the lipos. But I'm going to wait until I have a very accurate digital scale since balance is critical on tail blades. |

You really think it's gonna work? These blades spin at 10,000+ RPM. The centrifugal forces they experience are beyond ridiculous.

I'm running about 2000rpm on the gaui 550. So thats .06 ounces or 1.7 grams at 9000rpm. I'm guesstimating the distance from the tail shaft to the middle of the lipo will be 58mm or so.
So yeah, I'm nuts to try this. Apparently someone else pulled it off. Maybe I should find the owner of these blades. |

Hey kavic here is the post they are in:http://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/t5...ighlight=night
I was wondering did you ever try using the 1216 watch battery like they do on the Blade helis? https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=470010 https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=362444 |

Thanks for the RR link, good find. No, havent tried button cells on tail blades. Seems like they would be heavier. I did fly the 550 with some DIY night paddles that had rechargeable li-ion 2016s or 2032s, I forget which. They made my cyclic a bit sluggish but it worked out ok.
At some point I plan to try again on the 550 but not the protos. |
