VBar governor with Kosmik?
I am thinking of trying a Kosmik 200 with the new Logo700. I've read conflicting info of whether you can or can't successfully use the NEO/VBar governor with the Kosmik, or if the two don't play well together, and it's better to use the Kosmik gov.
Any solid information would be appreciated. I want to use the VBar gov.........so if this isn't a good option, I may go with a different ESC. Thanks! KevinB |

Kosmik does not support external governor.
The Kosmik governor is very good though.

Can't use the Vbar GOV with Kosmik ESC.
I didn't think I'd like it but I do like the Kontronic GOV. works great, first flight every time. |

If forced to use the internal governor, can you set up bailout to work properly for doing autorotations ?
Thanks again. KevinB |

That would be a Vbar control question as the Kosmik by default in helicopter mode has a throttle setting to use for auto rotation bail out.

Yes with all radios out there, even VBC, auto bailout is easy to do. Nothing to set in the Kosmik, just have your HOLD/IDLE switch set to 25-30% throttle value and it just works.

The kosmik has an amazing governor(beats external in my opinion!) and yes, the bailout is there and extremely reliable. Hear than rpm, just flat...
As a flying buddy demonstrates here:

Thanks for the info everyone.
Yes, the RPM is quite consistent in the video. The flying is all fairly smooth though......so not really testing how well the governor works under some serious torture testing collective MIS-management I may have to try a Kosmik to see for myself how it compares to a well set-up YGE/vbar governor. Thanks again, KevinB |

Thanks velocity90 I'll take your word for it.
The first ESC I ever bought was a Kontroniks 40. (probably an early version of what they now call the Koby40?) It worked well, but I could squeeze a little more power out of my setup on my trex450 sev2 using the vbar gov. I imagine the Kosmik tech is a little more advanced now. KevinB |

I read over the Kosmik200 manual.....
Why wouldn't program mode 3 work with the vbar gov ? That mode gives you full motor control with no brake. Isn't that what you want to let the VBar govern it? Just wondering. Thanks, KevinB |

I have heard of some doing it but why void your warranty and risk destroying the unit when the internal governor is better than a vbar gov.

Why would using mode 3 void your warranty ?

Any damage caused by an external governor to the esc is not covered under warranty

Hmmm. You would think an ESC that expensive could protect itself against damage when all it's being given is a request for a certain power level by the external governor. Wouldn't the internal temp./current protection stop it from doing something that would cause internal damage?
YGE doesn't have a clause like that on it's warranty. Granted, the warranty is 1/2 as long as the Kosmik.....but it's also 1/2 the price. KevinB |

Strange how this keeps coming up. It is obvious that Kontronik chose to go a different way with there ESCs. They have programmed in features and behaviors that are clearly not compatible with external governing. While no one can argue that choice is good, in this case Kontronik clearly feels that forgoing that option is worth the extra performance they offer in their own governing mode. It is worth remembering that they did offer the option on one there ESCs in the past. So they tried that route and then went back to internal only. They clearly felt the added choice wasn't worth it.
I believe it was mentioned in another thread that Kontronik's governor not only regulates using PWM, but it also varies the timing dynamically to maximize governing performance. I don't think there is another ESC on the market that does this. Like everything else in this hobby, people have their preferences and not everyone likes Kontroniks' governor. I personally love it and think its the best and smoothest power delivery out there.

Thanks for the info so far. Don't get me wrong....I will likely end up going with a Kosmik/Tellme solution just to see what all the fuss is about.
BTW, YGE also has automatic timing, although I believe its PWM once set, is fixed. That said, I have had a loss of power once due to commutation timing errors.....so it's probably not as refined as the Kosmik's. KevinB |
