Depends a bit on the size of your heli, with larger being ok a bit tighter, but a good general rule is that if you straighten out the blades and turn the heli on it's side, you don't want them to drop on their own. If you then give the heli a good down-shake, they should drop 45 degrees or more.

What detriment would the helicopter (and the pilot) experience if the blades are either too tight or too loose?

If too tight, you may experience vibrations on spool up. If too loose, on spool down. Or if one blade is tight and one is loose, you may have vibes either way.
Note that some helis will also get vibes on spool down from too much negative pitch.

I've heard that with FBL yo want your blades slightly tighter than the same sized FB bird. Those of you without FB heli experience, es tip the heli on its side with blades parallel to the ground easy up/down shake with a 450, and progressively harder shakes with larger birds. My 700s take a pretty healthy jerk to fold the blades.

Just yesterday I maidened a 450 fbl and noticed that the skids had a high frequency shake as it hovered. Then I remembered that I had tightened up the main grips to keep the blades straight when setting the blade pitch. Now they were still fairly easily moveable by hand, not super tight, but that turned out to be what was causing my vibration.

Anything classified as a micro.
Just close the grips up on the blades so the blades cannot twist in the grips The blades must remain loose enough to move easily! 300 to 450 Close the grips up until you feel some drag from the grips when you move the blade. That's just right. 500 and up. Turn the helicopter on its side. Do the flop test. All tail rotor blades. Just close the grips up on the blades so the blades cannot twist in the grips The blades must remain loose enough to move easily!

What he said above, except that for 500mm size and up, John Salt of rchelicopterfun.com recommends no blade on these larger helios should move during the "flop test". The blades should be able to align parallel during spoolup, but should be tight enough that no blade lags relative to the other during flight manoeuvres. This becomes more critical for the larger (500mm & up) blades. Resistance to turning the blades should be similar or you may get one lagging.

How many are using blade clips? I put them on my 450 and my 700. But if I follow instructions for tightening the main blades even with the bolts loose My blades are tight enough where if I give the heli a good shake on its side my mains barely move. So do I need to loose the clips?

I don't use them. On the 700, you should be fine. That's probably a bit tight on the 450, but the main test is whether you're getting vibrations during spool up or hover.

I am not familiar with blade clips. What are they?

They are the plastic clips that Align came up with that fit inbetween the grips and the blades. Some thought that helped reduce the hum in the tail that Align helis had at certain rpms.

Just maidened my Blade 360 CFX Trio. the blades were absolutely floppy, Tried to tighten them but the Screw was maxed out. Decided to spin it up, and it spun up with no vibe, flew great (although only on Throttle mode - Not 3D) and landed with no problems.
Anyone else fly the Blade 360 Trio?
