Default Another GAUI 550 Frame Mod ( Battery Mod)

Well I'm still learning to fly but, thought I would show off this mod to my GAUI

I was running 2 Lipo packs but that was a real pain to change out battery's .... as many of you know..

Here was my solution..' ..

1. Custom built tray
2. Outrage 550 Canopy
3. Trex 600 ESP Canopy Mount Bolts

I plan to run a 3700mAh battery.. it does come it a bit nose heavy but,
I was running two 4400mAh battery's before..

Solution turned out well...

Here are some photos..

Yeah...

I'm a long time builder.. (Planes) about 99% of my part I cut on CNC ..
This was my first attempt at cutting CF worked out well...

Just got into Heli's this Year...

one thing I always thought about heli's was " Na.. dont want to get into it... nothing I can build or make .. you have to buy everything...."

well the GAUI .. could use some mod's for sure :-)

I replaced the landing gear with TREX 600 Gear.. So then it made the tail fin look super small, ( so i made a Wal-Mart cutting board tail fin )

then this battery Issue ..I still have a bit of space under the canopy..

This is the second canopy mod ( I cut up a TREX 600 canopy to fit 2 (4400) Lipos in before.. but that was over sized even after cutting it smaller.. ( here are some pics of that.. mod )

but I really like that Outrage 550 Canopy, Have to think of some pain scheme..

WO.... I had not even though of using that canopy..

Looks like it will fit the.... battery touched at the very top..but does go over with no problem..

Could not do a complete fit as I replaced the canopy mounting bolts with (TREX 600) they are longer maybe .25" + .. so cannot open the canopy wide enough..

This is the stock ( Plastic Canopy) .. that I dont plan to use.. if anyone wants it .. they can have it for $4 + Shipping..

Default Second look

Had to take a second look..

Here is what it looks like with the stock canopy..

its pulled up from the bottom.. maybe about 3/4 of an inch...

maybe if I had 2 ( 3S Lipos) and staggered them .. so one is high one is lower.. it would fit better..

Nice mod...and work....now you need to make a new Horizontal fin......and get rid of that "Tiny" fin on the boom.....I use the trex 600 fin set.....it's cheap and you get both fins and mounting hardware for $9.95

I have a few other project in mind .. been hooked on this heli stuff now ..

:-) started with the GAUI 550 ..

Since then have added.. a 250 and 600 ..

I keep having to tell myself.. "Do I really need another Heli" .. I keep wanted to add a 450 ..

The Outrage canopy is sweet! Looks like my two piece plastic halves will be used as parts cups.

I had Luis make one of these for me. I just finished installing it. I was a little hesitant to cut the frame, but no worries, I cut it and I have to say, Luis' work is outstanding. The parts fit together perfectly! I did have to recut the battery strap slots, but that's no biggie because I use the stock Gaui straps.

The canopy, a Fusuno, fit perfectly with either my Turnigy or Hyperion 3300 batteries attached. I should clarify "perfectly". Normally, I would put the upward facing arm on the skids toward the bottom. It made installing the canopy much quicker (Jerrymac suggested that when I first got my Hurricane). Now, it's in the normal position, but the canopy would need to be redrilled to fit. I opted instead to try one part velcro hook and one part Scotch fastener. The velcro hook would be on the canopy and the Scotch fastener would be on the normal mounting arm. Prior to doing that I wanted to make sure they would hold. God, did they hold. It was impossible to get the two to separate. I don't have the loop side of velcro handy so I just put another Scotch fastener on the canopy and tried that. Perfect. The Scotch Fastener is easy to lock and easy to remove.

All in all, a great addition! Thanks Luis!

Scott

PS Earlier in the thread I wrote I'd pay money for the mod... I did.. at $26 it was a great buy. A couple of dollars for M3 x 40mm bolts, washers, and Nylock nuts and it was done!

Awesome, I'll get on to him.

As you can see I've been going to do the same thing to my 425 even got some CF board to do it but thanks to my time working on Seahawk composite panel repairs I get a very bad skin reaction to CF dust and I hadn't yet worked myself up for the itch. That and I doubt mine would have looked as good.

I planing on using Trex 500 canopies on mine with a adapter from Infinty Hobby made for the Protos.
