Default Trex 500 flight Video

I've had my Trex 500 for about a month, having come straight from the mCPx.Would be interested on some feedback on my latest flight. I think I'm being too careful/not trying hard enough when inverted. Any comments on flying style etc welcome.

Thanks dl. You think I should concentrate on backward flight before inverted or both at same time?

You're very right, I do find backward flight very difficult and often lose orientation. Next few battery packs practicing this I guess.

Hi.

You seem to have reasonable control of the heli, but I would take a little more care with regards to safety. Those snappy direction changes right in front of you camera guy were way too close (unless he was zoomed in a lot). Also, the person walking their dogs... You should have landed and waited for them to pass. If you have come straight from a micro heli, you need to understand that a 500 size heli at full noise can be very, very dangerous if you do not observe some safety precautions. All it takes is a failure of a single bolt, and your heli could plough into someone / something, no matter how good a pilot you are.

You will be a stick banging maniac soon enough, but please fly safe.

Cheers - AC

Have to agree so far - it's not a mCPx. You crash this, it's gonna co$t you. You hit yourself - (or the camera person) you'll regret it. That takeoff was not smart - but that's my opinion. Based on this flight, I would suggest all direction hover orientation practice both upright and inverted. Ask yourself, can you hover all orientations upright and inverted without bailing? Use your mCPx or a sim and get good at it. Then fly your 500 - like it's a 500.

Stop slamming the sticks, learn to slow down and make smooth moves.
Don't get me wrong you can fly.
I also agree with the safty statements mentioned above. Even if it's not a pilot error something can break.

Keep up the good work,

Craig

Its hard to tell in video how safe or unsafe his flying is. I would have to see ut in person.

I would learns backwards flight first. Then inverted flight will come more naturally.

+1 to all the above
Try and fly slow and coordinated in forward flight, that's often more difficult than full gaz and you will learn more and be more confident when learning backwards and inverted.
A nice coordinated slow banked turn is part of the basics and more difficult to do well than meets the eye IMHO!

My guess is that you dont fly together with others because you have your very own odd style! I think that is a very good thing

OK. thanks for all the feedback guys. I am going to make another video this weekend with all your comments and feedback in mind (safer, predominantly backwards flights, more disciplined take off/circuits) and post back here.

Thanks again.

pxpep, you're very right, I never fly with others.

Took her out. Nice gentle first pack. Practicing backwards figure 8's.

Put in the second back. Same idea. Take off nice and gently. Few forward figure 8's. Then decide , today is all backwards (and it sure was going to be!)

Went into backwards figure 8's, just after passing through the intersection point in the figure 8 I crashed it

I was surprised I was going so slow, it was really calm weather, had really slow headspeed (linear 0 to 100 throttle curve, was about midstick). I was surprised, after being able to fly so fast, and even forward inverted, this is a whole new ballgame.

I blame you lot for telling me practice backwards

I really have an awful lot to learn

sorry to hear about your crash.

You will crash many more times in your learning experience.

I crashed at least once learning every orientation and trick I know.

Why do you have your throttle liner?
I would run a flat or a gov.

Thanks dl. I will post some pictures in a while. Looks like the damage is as follows:
Main Blades,
Feathering Shaft,
Tail Blades
2*Cyclic servos

Surprisingly the main gear, flybar, and TT gears seem to be ok.

Hmmm. The thing is to decide how to continue learning, open to suggestions.
1.Fix up the 500 and make sure and have plenty practice in the Sim before trying anything new ( I tried backwards figure 8's on the sim after the crash and was disappointed to see I should have just gone on the sim for 30 mins before hand because , after about 15/20 mins I had backwards figure 8's pretty right).

2. Buy a 130x or McPx and have carefree practice in a more real environment.

3. Buy a Trex 250 Pro DFC, and have slightly less worries about crashing it than the Trex.

I will post some pictures of the damage soon.

What's wrong with running the throttle linear? (it was a calm day)

I prefer the slower headspeed when practicing orientations/slow moves/scale flying because it give much longer battery life, and flight time is important when learning orientations.

Is the variable throttle rate bad for the motor/esc or something?

Should I set up a flat throttle curve about 60% or something for this stuff?

Thanks.

A flat throttle curve is more stable. I find it harder to manage the collective when the head speed is changing with the pitch. A stable headspeed makes collective management alot easier for me, and I get a smoother flight even with collective adjustments in slow flight. I prefer a governed head speed myself..I dont fly with screaming head speeds and the governor really helps maintain the stable head even when I pull some moves that would otherwise, bog it down on a moderate head speed.

The 500 loves a high head speed. It REALLY helps with tail authority. I run 0-85-85-85-85 in normal, flat 90 in IU1 and flat 95 in IU2. Give it a try, it is how the 500 is meant to be flown!

Cheers - AC
