castle pro bec
In the manual it says
"NOTE: CC BEC Pro should never be operated in series or parallel with another BEC or backup receiver pack connected to the RX/Servo side of the circuit." Does this mean it's a bad idea to use an in-line regulator to step down the voltage for a 4.8v tail servo? http://www.futaba-rc.com/accessories/futm0960.html Or is this ok? Both per CC and in real life....

One potential problem I see in what you are describing is multiple voltages entering your controller through the control wiring. I would think that as long as you disconnect the B+ connector (center lead) from your control wiring to the servo from the controller, you would be OK, but you'll need to fabricate a special connector to the servo that supplies voltage only from the BEC and control from the flight controller. I run a seperate 20 amp BEC (not the Castle, though), set to 7 VDC output, with the Castle Edge 100 ESC BEC disconnected. The 20 amp BEC is feeding a voltage regulator for the servos with zero problems on my 550 DFC. The regulator also supplies a seperate and stable 5.2 VDC to controller and receiver. My servos are 615 / 655's (6 volt servos). The regulator is set to 5.5 VDC output so the servos don't see higher than rated voltage If set to 6 VDC output, the regulator shows 6.2 VDC output on the meter, which pushes the servo voltage above max rated input. The regulator also ensures the higher servo current that is needed is available to the servos and not restricted in any way. I built it to ensure the servos get what they need and for future upgrade path to HV servos, if I choose to go that path down the road. Last edited by 04fxdwgi; 01-30-2015 at 05:15 AM.. |

I don't see any issue to use a step down regulator. It will just regulate the output voltage.
I have a CC bec pro on which i have connected a Scorpion backup guard and never had an issue. The backup guard will kick in when the bec voltage drops below 5volts.

The regulator goes on the FBL's *output* to the tail. The FBL goes to the regulator, which goes to the tail servo. It's just put inline with the tail servo. This scenario is fine for the BEC.

The way my regulator works, it supplies 2 voltages. One 5.2 for the flight controller / receiver and one of any selected voltage for the servo's that you choose. Last edited by 04fxdwgi; 02-04-2015 at 03:36 AM.. |

On my old T-Rex 550, I ran the CC BEC Pro set to 6v and used a WR step down regulator (pic below) in-line to the tail servo (Align DS650) supplying about 5.2v. Never had an issue.

Thanks guys. I will do the cc pro bec with the in-line step down for my tail.
Now just one more question.. Is there a difference between 5v and 4.8v? I know the answer is .2v... But if my tail servo is rated for 4.8v will 5v hurt it? Should I keep looking for a 4.8v step down?

No, 5V is fine.
IIRC 4.8V is the nominal voltage of a 4 cell NiCd pack, but when fully charged, the voltage was actually higher. Like how a charged 6S LiPo starts at 25.2V, not the 22.2V nominal rating you might see on the label. Sent using Tapatalk.

Thanks for the help guys. Just a few more questions. I pick this bad boy up today. It has two output leads and says to use both. I'm using a ar7000 with a full size vbar.
Should I plug power to both the ar7000 and the vbar? Or both leads to the ar7000 and have the ar7000 power the vbar? I'm new to vbar as well... Also did I hear right that they come out of the bag programed at 6v? So I'm good to go if this is what I want?

Connect a BEC as close to your load (servos) as possible. Ideally both leads to the VBar. Through 2 separate plugs on the VBar.
I'd at least run 1 lead to the VBar. Sent using Tapatalk.
