Default EP259: Feeling a Little Overweight?

Join Nick, Justin, and Saje this week as they discuss the ever-changing trends in model weights. Is there such thing as the perfect weight? Why would you want a lighter model? What about a heavier model? Saje picked up a new transmitter, and Justin’s previous decision on getting a new 3D model is once again up in the air. - Justin

Heard you whining about high 30's temps.

I saw this in the Sharper Image catalog and was thinking of posting to the news for Dan. However, it's not really news.

But electric glove liners sounds like a winter flying option since they are thinner...

Although I'm not sure of your holding an aluminum Jeti in -7F it will make a difference.

The FCC are after Hobbyking over Orange transmitters, not receivers. Namely the DSM2/DSMX module and the Orange radio.

Over here, it carry's the appropriate CE mark, so there should be no chance of something similar happening here in Europe.

We will if we have to like at our frozen fingers funfly in January or February but it hasn't been that cold yet.

But normally no screw that. With no glove at 30 with the usual wind here you can't feel the sticks and fingers quit moving after about a minute or 2. Lol.

I'll fly in the 30's if no wind.

Default X7 Dilemma

I'm feeling some of Justin's woes but in a worse way.

I picked up a Gaui X7 basic kit on special sale for $449 shipped from the factory. I had only heard good things about it but literally last night, I also found the same research as Justin about the tail. I bought the kit because I've always wanted a 700 and I really like the Gaui X7 and because even if I upgrade parts (6mm tail shaft/hub, stronger OWB, CNC swash followers, keep standard head for now) the kit is still only $630...still 30% off a basic kit. And only upgrading the tail (seems to be the weak point) would cost me like $30.

With my budget, it will be about a year before I've got all the electronics for it. I just couldn't pass up a $449 700 kit. However...I am a little worried that I'll spend all this time pulling parts together, build the heli, and either have troubles or be on eggshells flying it just waiting for the tail to go. I'll cop to being a little bit of a worrier here, but the worry may just suck the fun out of this model for me.

I'm feeling pretty deflated for sure...especially since if I sell the kit for heli money again, I'll probably take a $150 bath on it (given that everyone else can also get the factory deal). I had also wanted to get all new components for this bird, since all of my heli gear except my 180 cfx has been bought used. If I compromise a bit on high dollar stuff and buy used, I may be able to do it for cheap and just fly the snot out of it.

Great show guys. I think there is a fine balance in model weight. It's really all how you fly and what you're trying to do with the model.

Keep up the great work.

I enjoyed the show. Especially the part about the sexiness of the Gaui X7 LOL.

I tend to prefer lower head speeds. My 11.82lbs Logo 700 at 1700RPM on 710ish blades seems to be giving me the best feel of all the helis I've tried so far. Very responsive, yet docile. It's a very well behaved helicopter.

Scorpion 4530-500
CC EDGE 160HV
CC BEC Pro
Switch 713s (200g each -- keeping the VTX 717s out of harm's way on the wall for now)
Rotortech 105s
2 x Pulse 6S 4500 45C (690g each)
3Digi FBL
2 Spektrum satellites
3 x TORQ 9280
1 x MKS 669

I could have definitely gone with a smaller motor and a smaller ESC, but I already had them.

Always cringe watching landing gear break on bounced autos or when the heli drops the last foot on heavier helis. Design has a lot to do with it but a heavy heli doesn't help.

I enjoy my 4.6kg E5SS swinging 716mm blades with 12.5 degrees of collective at 1550rpm for 10 min flights. Recently I added the TelMe module to my heli which required me to redo my endpoint setup. I played with 1400rpm for about 20 flights but didn't like it. I found I enjoy 1550rpm more. I have 1650 on IU2 but don't use it much.

Great episode guys! One thing that wasn't mentioned about a helis weight that I have experienced is where the weight is carried on the airframe. I don't mind a heavier airframe is the weight is carried in areas such as the rotor head, main shaft, and drive train. Having these components a little over built will help with durability in a crash and because the weight is close to the center of the heli and closer to the disc it doesn't affect flying characteristics as much.

But the farther away from the rotor head the extra weight is, the bigger the impact that has on performance. I would much rather have an over built rotor head than over built landing gear or tail assembly.

Currently I am running a Goblin 630 on 660mm blades with a 700 Black thunder boom (which is lighter than my 630 boom)
Setup is :
MS RAPIDS 660mm Blades
HK II 4225-610KV 20tooth pully at 2150headspeed
Castle 120HV
Glacier 4000mah 12S
2200mah 2S lipo RX
BK 7002 cyclic
BK 8005 Brushless rudder

I'm starting to think 2150 is just a massive waste of headspeed.

but I also need to get an accurate weight of the model as it sits.

Any thoughts?

-Markus

If you have a set of 700 Size blades laying around throw them on and turn the headspeed down. Re gear if you have the pinion. But just see how you like it. I think it would be a sweet flying setup

But if you don't have telemetry, make sure you test fly to see what the draw is. I swapped motors this year on a 550, dropped my timer by 30 seconds (from 4:30 down to 4:00) and had been coming down with 28% left. New motor and I came down with 11% left,,,

Starting out, with 630mm blades, The norm was like 2250 2300 for this model. It sounds awesome, but really is just an insane amount of Hs.

The 660x64 rapids really changed it completely (better) but of course I went down to 2150ish.

Im thinking 1850 with 13+- pitch with these blades, but i would really like to try the vtx697's. Im just curious if the ICE120hv is up to it.

I don't have a number in mind for a preferred weight. All I fly are Nitros and I'm told they are pretty light. On the 700 nitros running an OS105, I don't feel much difference between full and empty on the tank. On the 600 running an OS 55 I feel a huge difference between full and empty.

On the HS, I base it on whatever gets me to about 16000 on the engine. 1950 or so. Or less depending on gearing. My rational is that I feel like the engine likes running at that one optimal speed.

If I'm breaking in engine I fly at 1700 to 1750. Generally I don't like lower HS because I don't feel the engine runs well there. I have observed some low HS E setups running 6S. And they were surprisingly cool and intriguing.

Good show. As always. Thanks very much.

My main machine is a

Plöchinger Voodoo 700 (http://www.eheli-tuning.de/?site=voodoo700)
696 Blades
Pyro 700-52 (hand wired by the guy who is doing the black edition)
Jive 80 HV
Old and lighweight Savox 1258 Servos on Head
Futaba BLS 251 on Tail
10S 4500mAh 40C Batteries
1200, 1450 and 1750 rpm Headspeed
4.2kg that should be around 9 pounds

I love light helicopters. I like low rpm (using mid rpm most of the time) for smooth and slow 3D. I like it, if its more like a continuous flow than fast and smacked. This very light weight fits perfectly for it.

I have a logged peaks of 105A on the ESC and having no issues with it.

So, yes, I have flown other helicopters and other weight classes. For what I like, when flying, I need light helicopters.
The only helicopter, I love to fly the same, is the old Logo 600 from a friend, converted to 710 blades, that weights around the same than mine
