Not when you say twist wires you talking bout coiling them? And wonder why in GPS and atti mode the f550 acts like it has no power but in manual mode it's a beast. GPS/atti climb out. Doesn't act like it has the power to climb.

Well, guess what: another setback , but at least in the end I found out what my real problem was. Exchanged 1 bullet connector that felt loose on the motor #5 and de-soldered and then re-soldered all remaining bullets on #5 and #4. Found that none had a cold solder joint, in fact the quality of the soldering was quite acceptable. Not great, but definitely acceptable, I could see it clearly as I was de-soldering the bullets one by one. Twisted all motor leads to eliminate possibility of magnetic interference and retested: now the #3, #4 and #5 were consistently twitchy!!! What the heck??? Tom, you won't believe it: the whole problem was that the Al expansion plates are a bit thinner than the original plastic arms, making motor mounting screws too long. On the wire lead side the screw is just barely pushing into the wires coming into the motor, and if it works itself in between the wires and just nicks the insulation, we have a problem. Good thing I didn't get the bird up into the air with screws pushing into the wire leads inside of the motor housing So now all I need is 24 small washers and I'll be fine, will try to get flat/spring washer sets so I won't have to use the locktite.

OK, got some washers, re-installed all 6 motors and re-tested: the problem is solved now that mounting screws don't go into the motor as deep, they must have been touching the windings. All motors spin properly now, no trace of twitchiness
Tied down all the wires: And closed up the frame: BEC/LED/USB unit on the back of landing gear: Below video of the gimbal stabilization. The pitch is almost spot on, the roll needs to be much faster, will adjust it tomorrow: [ame]http://youtu.be/pXsmjKoBeQk[/ame]

Thankfully, when mounting the second motor, I used the motor mount screws that came with it and they were about 2mm shorter; using the original screws would have probably just put me in the same position!

I guess it's lucky the windings weren't damaged. Sure does look great.
Enjoying this, but still confused about gimble stabalisation. If you were in a heli, you would move with the heli, and you would stabalise with your head. If the camera always stays level, won't you be confused about whether your heli is level? If I were doing this on a heli I would want it to look like the videos that I did for myself when I just had the camera strapped to the heli, and I would want to look left, right, up down, within reason as I moved my head. How will you know if your heli is angled down, for example? Wouldn't what I describe be a more complete flying experience, if that is what one is aiming for? I guess these multis are a whole different ballgame? Cheers Sutty

The thing is, you are using the camera on the gimbal just to record the experience, not to fly with. You use a rigid mounted cctv camera that will give you the feel when the acft leans or tilts. Much easier to fly that way.

That's the same conclusion I came to after the trials with the quad: the requirements for video recording and fpv cameras are mutually exclusive, so 2 cameras are really needed.
My fpv camera is in NYC right now so I'm just saving a space on the deck for it right now. The maiden will be LOS exclusively, maybe with some longer looks into the monitor in super stabilized GPS-lock mode. Tom, were you able to get the head tracking to work on your fpv camera?

Ah, right, thanks guys, interesting, I think I get it then. There are two things going on here. You fly around, possibly in fpv mode, and you make a great HD video of it by using your super stabalised camera. The best of both worlds.
Cheers Sutty

Nothing gets by you, Sut, ol' buddy!
I tried to fly fpv with the GoPro on the gimbal. Not good at all. Without knowing how you're pitched it's almost impossible! Jerry, no. I found it easier to just use the sliders on the side of the tx radio to control the movement. The head tracker is mostly used for fpv airplanes. Want to make a Pinguin someday soon. http://www.readymaderc.com/store/ind...jh2obk3c36h1n0

Pre-maiden check
Done
Finished creation: Navigational LEDs installed, check Should give me decent orientation visibility even in daylight. The gains adjustment on the gimbal, check The Tx programming to have all Naza-M flight and control modes, check Failsafes programmed and recognized by Naza-M, check The auxiliary battery on the top is Esky Big Lama 3S 800mAh battery, powers up the video Tx and navigational lights, it should give me about 3 hrs of operation: [ame]http://youtu.be/Un9wK4Gtge8[/ame] Tomorrow maiden

I'm already excited for you. I hope it all goes to plan. It must feel like being at work, and deploying an entire line ready for production starting up the following day, lol.
Good luck. Cheers Sutty

Did you get some of those stealth props? I cannot see them anyway
Good Luck

That reminds me of an airshow I went to many years ago, when the F117 was still fairly new, and there was no way they would allow one to be on display. They might still not, don't know. Either way, there was a line of aircraft with a nice little board infront of each one of them giving you a whole bunch of details about them. Part way along the line there was a gap with an empty bay, but still with a board in front of it. As I got nearer I saw that the details read something similar to this, "US Airforce, Lockheed F117 Nighthawk strike aircraft, utilising the latest in stealth technology. Full details classified. Impressive, isn't it?"
I think Jerry is going for a similar approach. Cheers Sutty

They display them now. I took both of these at RIAT in 2007.

Actually I had a good maiden today, flew 2 packs with stock motors and 10" DJI props without an incident Set the timer for 5 min only, this resulted in 2700 mAh being put back into the packs, meaning I'll eventually get about 10 min, but for now I'll go 6 or 7. After 5 minutes the motors are quite warm, about 50°C (but not the ESCs, these are just lukewarm). That was to be expected as my stretched airship weighs in 2750g ready to takeoff. I really need these stronger motors and 11" or 12" props. I will have to re-set the fail-safes again, as I think I messed up on the throttle level, and play with some gains, otherwise the thing is golden . I flew it in a light intermittent wind (about 10 kph) and it had no problem Takes some getting used to, in attitude and GPS attitude modes the throttle stick is not a throttle at all, it's an ascend-descend command . GPS attitude makes it just sit there regardless of the wind, it's incredible. I think it'll be possible to do heavily-assisted light-duty fpv flight (in one of the attitude control modes) with the video feed from ultra-stabilized GPH2, but first things first, some more test flights are required. There wasn't much to the first pack, but the second pack was all in the air with no mid-pack landing; the videos are cooking as we speak, one from on-board GPH2 and another from half-broken but still ticking hatcam Bloggie
