Default Project Blade SR "Pro" - Brushless Tail

So the SR took off yesterday and immediately started piro'ing causing a rough landing. I found out that the tail motor decided to burn up without warning (pretty cool huh). I really hated the tail anyways coming from flying a trex450, and that annoying wagging gyro which eflite says is "normal".

So.... brushless time!!

My friend just happened to have a spare feigao motor for the tail and I had 2 CC10's. So it began and the SR underwent surgery.

I pulled the mixer board and useless gyro out, installed the cc10's, new tail motor and gyro in, setup the DX7.

This thing totally ROCKS now! I was very surprised to see how much MORE power the stock main motor has with the CC10 and a 25c battery. For the mean time here's some teaser pics. More pics and a video showing flight performance coming soon.

UPDATE 3-31-10

Here's a video of it flying: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpJygSW3aEs[/ame]

It's not the greatest but what I have for now. Sorry for the sarcastic commentary lol.

As far as the exact components used, they are:

Feigao 1208436L: http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id...28&pid=U117989

Castle Creations 10 amp ESC: http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/cas...sc_2462799.htm

Detrum GY48V headklock gyro: http://www.hobbypartz.com/60p-dy-1017.html

The CC10 is pretty pricey and there are cheaper solutions that will perform just as good available now such as: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...eed_Controller which is $9 lol

I chose to completely eliminate the eflite ESC/mixer but you don't have to do this. The eflite ESC could power the main motor and the 10 amp BL esc (CC10 or equivalent) plugs into the gyro.

As far as wiring there IS soldering involved. You need to connect the power wires from the 10 amp BL esc to the eflites (basically parallel). You need to solder from the ESC to the tail motor. It is also very important to pull the positive pin from the 10 amp BL esc's RX connector so you don't have 2 BEC circuits conflicting together.

That's it! Gyro gain is at 80% the motor seem to run smoothest on the oldest castle software available, they were glitchy on the newer software for some reason.

M52, nice....what are "cc10's" and what gyro? What size feigao motor? Am new so I don't know all the diff parts that are out there. I'm sure others will be asking this as well so I just thought I'd break the ice.

Give us a bit of a "how it's done" vid ??

I love that Gyro, it's the Detrum GY48V, clone 401b gyro. $17.70 - $19.23

It's the gyro I run on my T-Rex 250. At first I purchased this gyro while I was waiting for the Spartan Quark to come out, but dang it holds the tail on my 250 SOLID. I'm no hardcore 3d guru, but for me this Gyro kicks donkey ballz for sub $20.00

Never thought of using it for the SR, I bet she rocks now.

It is amazing it is only $20.00 and it is better than the stock gyro in the SR. I am a total newbie, why is the stock gyro in the SR sells for $65.00? Are you paying for the eflite name on it?

Thanks,

John

+1 even this cheap gyro would be a upgrade on a stock SR.

Basically yes, the stock gyro and mixer will be for sale shortly too

So the Detrum gyro was a little heavy since its case is made of aluminum and it had quite a lot of extra wire length I didn't need. I removed the case, trimmed/resoldered the wires shorter and put some clear shrink wrap on it. Result is nearly 1/3 lighter.

Before 20.5 grams
After: ~7.4

It will be interesting to see how many flights you get from a brushless tail. The guys at my field are burning them up too. That little motor has to work so hard it gets very hot. The last one was a medusa research, one of the best and it lasted 70 flights. Keep us posted.....BTW, do you have to do anything special to arm the tail esc?? Great job!!.... J

So two escs? One for the tail and one for the main motor?

+1. I would love to know exactly what parts you used, how you used them, where to get them, and a video or instructions. I feel mine is going to blow out soon. I just know it.

Default Blades

M5 and I are currently testing these blades on his SR pro. They bolt right on and are about 1-2 grams a pair heavier than stock. They are some sort of extremely light plastic covered with fake CF but so far are performing much better than stock.. Much more durable and more rigid than stock. I have couple pairs of these and can get more.. Price will be around $15.00 shipped in the US. I do want to finish testing first before selling.. They look BLING.

A brushless inrunner makes sense. Would be nice to know which one would be the best or other brands we could use.

Default Tail motor replacement- Brushless

I think This might be the one..
http://www.feigao.com/sdp/85838/4/pd...tml#normal_img

Size: 12mmX22mm
weight: 10.5g (0.37oz)
1208430S:5200KV
Maximum current: 2A
Internal Resistance:1.0ohm
Without load:0.2A
Good for Heli tail drive

what if you were to hook this to a gearbox...????
http://www.feigao.com/sdp/85838/4/pd...tml#normal_img

With the right gear/pinion combo you could seriously increase the tailrotor speed

do you need a separate ESC for the BL tail motor?

Unless you can find a dual-brushless 2-in-1 unit, then yes, you need a separate ESC for the tail motor.

Funny thing... I still have a little adapter kicking around that will convert a brushed ESC signal of up to ten amps into a brushless signal. It was made for the old ParkZone planes, where if you wanted to convert to brushless, you had to replace ALL of the electronics in the plane because none of them were compatible with hobby-quality parts (3-wire servos, standard receivers, etc.) So a local Utah guy invented this board that takes in a brushed ESC output, has a separate pair of wires for itself to the battery, and puts out a brushless signal on the other end. Basically an ESC that accepts voltage as the input dictating its speed, rather than a signal wire.

Weighed it against my 8A brushless ESC, and the thing weighs 2 grams more Simplicity for the win...
