I just wish Google Checkout had been first to the party. I personally think it is a better system for both the buyer and seller. Paypal is so popular (since Ebay actually owns and promotes their use) that is almost impossible to do business with out their service.

This is definitely helpful. I appreciate it. But one question.....how do you know how much shipping is gonna cost until you ship it? Do you go to the Post Office and get a price then tell them and then they pay it?

Personally, I always include shipping and PP fees in my price....but that's just me. I do it that way because that's what I like to see when I'm shopping.

Although I usually sell on the other site, I always advertise (and follow through) of paying for the PayPal fees (actually deducted from PayPal payment) and never use the "gift" options. This keeps everyone honest and protects the innocent people from scammers. Another option the scammers use is a trade. It's hard to collect something from someone who, either doesn't exist, or doesn't have the item for trade.

Actually, if you pay with a balance, and choose any "personal" option no one pays fees. If you don't have a balance they charge more...

You said it, bro. I just bought a heli, and the seller said paypal was in the price. Easy enough. I used to hate PayPal as I knew they had a billion$ idea...and want a key into everyone's checking account. However, they have let me use them without ACH, and now I consider them like buying gas with a credit card. In every transaction, the buyer pays all costs. Happy hovering!

If you send payment as a gift you have no protection. If I sold you a $1000 dollar RTF Trex 500 and you send payment as a gift....I could NOT send you anything but a smiley face and you'd have no recourse through paypal whatsoever. I can't help but think that a court of law would also find it odd that payment was sent as a 'gift'. If payment was a 'gift'....what more than a 'thank you' could you expect in return?

If you send as "gift" or anything under the "personal" menu, they charge the fee if it does not come out of your paypal balance. Only if you have a paypal balance does the fee get waived. If not, the fee is more then just "goods".

I think the sell should pay the fee know matter what because they are the ones making the money and its a sellers fee.

Sorry, when I see these ads saying funds are to be sent as a "gift" I just laugh as it's not that hard to sell something and get the price you want.

If a seller wants to sell something set your price + shipping instead of saying it has to be sent as a gift to avoid fees...etc

Such a conflict of "sale" criteria and for those that actually sent funds as a gift I hope you get what you pay for, since it's not a "gift"

I read on an earlier post by MTDV, about how he got screwed over badly by the seller (Eric...memo to me, never deal with this guy).
Anyway, some would say there is nothing you can do about that, but IF...big if...IF you pay with your credit card, your purchase is insured by the credit card company. So, If you do not get the services or products you were supposed to get, you can dispute the charges...with all the evidence of the wrong doing MTDV had, he most likely would have gotten his money back. The dispute process is not a simple one, but it's definitely worth a shot if you get scammed and didn't get what you paid for. What ends up happening is the credit card TAKES the money back from PayPal and PayPal in turn TAKES the money back from the sorry SOB that scammed you. I've never had to go through a dispute and it doesn't always work on your favor, but its definitely worth a shot.

This is just an FYI for those of you that weren't aware of this...Also, in case you do have to dispute something, it is a good idea to keep copies of conversations, photos, receipts and anything else that can be used as proof of the transaction/scam. In MTDVs case, I'm certain he would have gotten his money back.

I hope this information is helpful to anyone who gets scammed.

I was talking with MasterCard on an unrelated subject but decided to ask them a question about how they handle disputes with a private part from both a seller and buyers perspective.

They told that if you are a buyer and in good standing with MC all you have to do is call them up and tell them you didn't get what was claimed by the seller and they'll put a hold on the funds until it's worked out. The buyer just needs to forward a copy of the ad and explain what was wrong and they'll have you send the item back. When the seller get's it they'll refund the money.

That's not bad at all but if you are a seller, here's the bad one. If a buyer pays you via PayPals "gift" option (or some other way but uses a credit card) and calls and says the the seller never delivered then the seller will have to prove that not only did he send it but that it was received and who signed for it. If the seller can't come up with exactly who signed for it MC will refund the buyers money. You as a seller will have to do ALL the legwork yourself to get this resolved.

On the other hand, if you use the "goods" option, ship the package to the address that the buyer specifies in the Paypal payment and you require a signature. You are fully protected and paypal will deal with the CC company on your behalf and will get them to drop the claim since they have proof it was delivered. MasterCard are the ones who told me this. So, I called Paypal to confirm and they told me the same.

So, using the "gift" option can be bad for both buyer and seller. Personally, I'd rather deal with Paypal than my CC company and despite all the urban legends about how bad Paypal is I've done thousands of transactions with them and never once had a problem that wasn't my own fault.

So, as a seller, I'll gladly pay the "goods" fee to get the Paypal protection. Not to mention that I won't compromise my integrity by asking buyers to lie to Paypal just so I can save a few cents or a few bucks.

These are the steps I take whenever I purchase something from the Classifieds:

1. Reply to the thread saying you sent a PM.
2. A some point, the earlier the better, quote the original message in a reply.
3. Click the pic and save it to your computer in case the OP removes it after the sale.
4. I prefer to pay and get paid by invoice. NEVER SEND PAYMENT AS A GIFT
5. Take screenshots of the thread. This is helpful in case the OP edits the original information.
6. Save your PM exchange.

It's all about making as good a case for yourself as you can. If you end up filing a PP dispute, you will need to provide evidence to support your claim.

However, I've never sold anything here before - is there a How-To explaining the correct procedure and "Best Practices" somewhere? (I searched but could not find one - this thread is the closest one I could find.)

I have a PayPal account and it sounds like this is the way to go, but I'm not sure how to to go about doing this.

I realize this is an older thread but there is a new scam in paypal. It is the "paypal.me" situation. This is a friends and family payment just like a gift payment and this method will not offer the buyer any protection under PayPal. usually this will be a link provided from the seller will look like paypal.me/username/dollar amount for example "paypal.me/johndoe/200" this is the gift payment to that user. BEWARE There is no Buyer protection if this method is used!!!!

In fact when I price an item on ebay I add part of my mortgage payment and utility bill, shipping costs, PayPal and Ebay fees, office supply charge and an extra buck to super-size my next meal at McDonalds without anyone knowing.
