6S Lipo

Thinking of going 6S too but seems like battery choices are limited or expensive. I'd like to get Gens Ace 1200 30C @ Hobbypartz but shipping is more than the actual price of the battery. 2 packs @ $52 and $65 shipping Also, I see some here are using Hobbywing Platinum 40A PRO esc. I wonder if the built-in bec is just fine? Thanks in advance! |

You can get Hobbyking batteries as little as $19 and another $10 to ship. Remember that you simply will not need a high C rating as the most you will probably ever use will fall under 15a max. Also the esc and bec rating depend on how much electronics load the servos will pull. My last 6s heli running the Scorp 2221-2010 was only pulling 5.5a in a 2700rpm hover. And the other one I built side by side as a comparitive version with the heavily modded SeV2 frame only pulled 7. The third flybarred version I just built for a good freind of mine was also pulling 7 at 2700 and used the Ice50 esc. But it also had a load of electronics gear hanging on it also.
It is pretty tough to cheap your way through a proper 6s build. However lately I have seen quite a few economic esc's coming out that are 6s ready. You will need a minimum of a 5a switching bec to make it work safely. Personally I prefer the Castle Ice series myself. They rarely go down, but recently I had one come down in flames on me during a test flight on a new build. So even those can be pushed past their limits. Personally I would never drop below the 1300ma battery as it fits right under the canopy with some easy mods and works well. My new frame I custom fabbed holds two 1300ma 6s batteries up under the carbonfibre 450 canopy and it fit like a glove over them.. BTW: I just had to post this here. 12s has arrived! I just recieved the two prototype scorpion 2221-1020kv 12s motors I had them build me from their research division, and already have one installed with brand new electrics in my heli. And since they officially labelled these that means these will soon be in production! I admit I do not fly a pro anymore but wanted to post this up here for the guys thinking of upgrading to 6s since this is now where everybody tends to look. The other 6s thread is impossible to find now since they didn't sticky it. One of the 12s build threads is over in the Skookum 720 section since that is the system I will be using to drive the custom DFC head I had to build so that I could run my 420mm MsComposites. The other is in the B400 section as I used their 3 bearing main support design in my frame. I kept blowing out gears in my Trex with the 2 bearing main support due to shaft instabilty with my 6s versions earlier. This heli is part Trex however in that I am basing the new frame with the SeV2 Kde aluminum body plate and parts of the carbonfibre lower panels. https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=432139

Problem with YEP 45A ESC (aka HK YGE clone..)
Hi ,
very concerned because want to migrate to6S and it seems I fried up two servos (DS410M) in my Trex Sport... Any way my setup is : YEP 45A ESC (with programming card...) from HK Motor HG2218/1860KV bought in eBay ( a chinese cheapery..) Turnigy 6S 1300mah 35C from HK Ok at first spool up for 3 mins all seems in worker order. But after I stopped it I checked the motor and it was hot (strange ...very strange to be a 6S setup...) and the servos all were working normally. Changed with the programmer card PWM frequency and other parameters and all went ok until the 3 spool up where I noticed the AILERON/PITCH servos were NOT WORKING AT ALL... So changed the setup again powering with the ALIGN stock esc at 3S and nothing at all also with this one....I began to be VERY concerned...So changed with two other used ones and yes they were working,,,, So two servos are KAPUT!! DEAD!! I tried again to put the YEP back in order to check this 2 servos and they were working but with an incredible BUZZ in rest position ( this is not normal,,,because with the stock ALIGN in 3S they are not buzzing at all...). So ....anyone of you had problem with the YEP ESC from HK (it seems a good ESC and VERY easy to setup also...)? Suggestion?? What to do? Must I buy Castle and ALIGN SERIOUS STUFF'?? I don't know what to do... and yes I would like to fly 6S because here in Monterrey (Mexico) we are at an average of 38º/42º now....so is hot!! Any suggestion very welcomed. |

Have you measured the bec voltage the Yep is putting out into your electronics yet? Also what reciever are you using?
No matter which Esc you are using you always check the Bec voltage coming out with a voltmeter before running the system.

I have the YEP 45A, but I am currently using it on 3S. I will be converting to 6S shortly (Scorpion 2221-2010)
So far the ESC is working fantastically on a Scorpion 2221-6, 3400HS GOV. This is in a blade 450X, using AR7200BX w/ upgraded Cylics HS5065's and stock tail servo. BEC Voltage on mine measured exactly 5.5V as advertised.

1)the voltage you get is when you are connected with a 3S pack?? 2)with the YEP programmer from HK HOW you achieved to program the ESC to run @ 3S?? I get with a 6S pack connected from the BEC 5.1V ( and I DON'T know if this voltage for a DS410M is TOO low...but I think not...). I have measured from the stock ALIGN ESC 5.86V from the BEC...with a 3S pack connected... In my program card (the one I have bought from HK to program YEP ESCs) the MINIMUM voltage from which i can start to program the ESC is 4S... I'm interested to know on HOW you have achieved that... Thanks for a reply... |

Yep, measured when connected to a 3S pack.
I got it to work on 3S by merely hooking it up. I think its Auto-Lipo detect on by default. The programmer doesn't go below 4S i think which is weird, but as long as you don't select a Lipo size it works fine.

Hi everyone, Can someone do me the big favor and post the settings sheet for the ice50 if you have a scorpion 2221-2010 and the non-slant main gear.
I'm getting inconsistency on the governor behavior. |

SO I bought a Castel Creation CC BEC 10A 6S switching regulator which I think I will solder exactly over the YEP ESC where are soldered the + and - and I will detach the + from the YEP internal BEC to avoid double circuitry alimentation... I will see what i get I will inform you...It seems a good ESC but this one gave me some problems... thank you anyway for your replies. |

Guys, i'm panning what to buy for my 450 PRO, flying it hard 3d,
Now my setup is: Align 450M,emax 60A esc (align 35 burned), hitec 5065mg and turnigy 2200 40c, blades 325mm. Flying time is 3 minutes, putting back 1800-1900 mAh Now I want something flying longer (4 mins and I will be more than happy) and with more power. My plan on 6S setup: Align 450MX 1700kv - best bang for buck I think Hobbywing 40A platinium Mikado mini vbar with governor Same servos Turnigy 1300mah 35c (I want gens ace but shipping to eu is 139$, crazy) Radix 350mm mains and longer tail boom (tarot 480) What pinion should I use for it. Oh I've forgotten, DFC head. And if you think I can buy something better for same money don't bother to tell Thanks!

Personally, I would leave the stretch kit out of the equation. As for the pinion, I would suggest using the 12T slant pinon with the 121 slant main gear. It will provide a 3100-3200 RPM head speed without a problem. If you want a higher head speed, you may want to consider going with the scorpion 2221-2010 motor.

Why I should not stretch it as I read a lot of good opinions about 350mm blades on 450 pro? Probably I would use 15T straight pinion as I have abt 10 spare straight main gears

IMO, I don't think it's necessary to spend the money on a stretch kit. The money could be put to better use on servos for example. The performance benefit is just not enough for me to justify the cost.
If you've got a wide selection of straight pinions, then stick to it. I'm just partial to the slant gear because it does make the system run more efficiently and more quiet.
