An alternative to a modded Allen key is simply to dril a 3.5mm hole in the rear fuze to allow a ball M3 Allen driver access to the two screws, you can then use this for aerial egress if you like!

Default DS gear change who's done it

Gentleman,

There is no need to disassemble the anti rotation bracket.
Just undo this bolt on both sides and slide the whole block out.

Thanks Lyhn, I will have a look at that. However while Im at it I just ordered the Jlog GPS unit which I have always wanted to install plus I need to get DT to make some of those rear vents for me too. His Temps are 10-15 degrees lower than mine. Clever man that! So my fuse will be coming off any way.

There is another set at the bottom that you can't get to with the fuse on so not sure that's going to work.

John, I was thinking that you had drilled holes to access the bracket. Definitely another way to do it.

Richard beat me to it. I was going to remove that plate, but as he stated, you can not get to the bolts at the bottom without removing the fuse.

I switched my gear too.

Quote:
it took 5 min and with a modified 2.5mm allen key to get the screws on the antirotation bracket out without taking the fuse off. it only took 14 screws to replace it.
I also used the cut wrench as well to remove the antirotation post.

Hi Guys,

Well I was trying to convince myself NOT to change the Main Gear but I must say that having been involved in this hobby for 40+ years (and Full Size Aviation for 35 years), my conscience would occasionally poke me in the ribs.

Anyway I arrived home today (form work), and had a couple of packages waiting for me in my workshop, one being my New Gear and Williams Gear too.

I must say that the differences in the new gear are substantially obvious. If the gears were almost identical then I may have delayed the replacement BUT the webbing and general condition of the New Gear is so much more robust. So I set my clock and the whole process took me 60 min, and bear in mind I am overbearing and methodical, plus I did some cleaning whilst parts were adrift.

Luckily for me my rear cooling vents allowed perfect access to the Pitch Slider. I have also noticed that the New Gear has LESS backlash and generally fits better than the original one.

Lets hope that this mod stands the test of time.

Hi Guys,

Yesterday at the flying field I noticed an unusual amount of end play on my main shaft and for the life of me (memory loss synonymous with age), I couldn't remember what shims - if any, I had used when I changed the Main Gear.

So when I got home yesterday evening I decided to investigate and actually I hadn't used any shims - which means I obviously forgot to check this important step when doing the deed. My issue last night was that my end play was 0.55mm and I only had three shims from Gerd (2 x 0.1 and 1 x 0.2), so was left with too much end play once again. However, I was lucky enough to find a 0.7mm shim in my box of goods but this would have put too much load on the bearings.

This led me to shim the top of the Main Gear by 0.15mm and it now fits perfectly. Actually the advantage of this 0.7 shim is my Main Gear and first stage pinion are now perfectly aligned.

Just remember if you do require any shims they should go between the Main Gear and Aluminum Spacer.

Nice Work Darryl...as always you are seriously meticulous. I'm a lucky guy to be able to learn from you.

Might have to come by to shim down my Gear as well...My box of goodies has a lot of shims so i'm sure if I do need any I will be able to find one - I hope.

Again good Job!!

Cheers William,

Actually I could have left the main gear intact and taken 0.15mm from the aluminum spacer but after dry fitting the components several times it worked out better skimming the main gear. Plus if I had skimmed the aluminum spacer then my rotor shaft would drop down .015mm requiring a complete setup of my pitch curves.

As It turned out my replacement main gear sleeve was 0.55mm shorter then the original gear also finding 12mm I.D. shims can be a little tricky as most RC sizes are 10mm and below.

Sometimes some endplay appears after initial snug fit and a few flightsv- think bearings may seat a little either in their mounts or maybe the races

Done mine last night. After putting the gear in I too had play.

Will be looking to see if I have any shims that will fit.

Did my gear last night...dry fitted (quick and lazy dry fit) and once I put the fuse on realized i had play!! So this morning I did the whole process again..I was pretty pissed off. Luckly Gerd supplied a few 12mm shims which solved the problem! Looking forward to fly the DS again...its been almost a month which is not like me!

There were no shims with mine. Just the main gear and pinion.

I really hope I got some 12mm shims.

The kit came with shims. The gear came just by itself
