I assume you are talking about the roll pin in the tail pulley?

This is a good thread on the subject (but a search will bring up more).

I know Ah Clem uses an arbor press. I put one on my Christmas wish list because it seems like it'd be something with many possible uses.

It's not likely Home Depot or any of the other major hardware chains would have them. You can get them online. I got mine at McMaster-Carr:

I had a broken drill bit that I used to push it out - worked great.

+1
And push it out towards the side I pushed it in.
Just don't use something that will slip into the pin. this will expand it, and you will have great problems in getting it out.

An old allen head driver that fits, second set of hands to hold the boom, and a small hammer.

You do realize that you will have to start running and restoring antique toy trains if you get an arbor press, don't you?

I got mine years and years ago to press on pot metal wheels and have used it on many things (including full sized automobile parts).

I did recently purchase the MA tool for doing this, but have not tried it yet.

Is that the special jig that doesn't work on the Atom 500 pulley because the diameter is too large?

Alan,

I think so. I believe some people have reported that (as I said, I have not tried it yet).

I did discover I was making it harder on myself because I did not remove the boom. Last weekend I decided to replace the tail shaft but this time took the extra 15 seconds to remove the boom before fiddling with the tail. Amazing how much easier it became.

Sometimes its the simple things.
