Tale of two tails ...
I've got two of these ... long story, wont bore anyone with that (involves a tree). Bought the first one last week; second one on Sunday.
The first one flies easily. Stable hover, no tail drift, some vibration where expected. Pops up into a fairly stable hover, and with a little correction is solid and can be flown with confidence. I stripped a few teeth off the umbrella gear on the first flight, so there's some occasional twitching. But not enough to cause me to change the gear yet. Lots of fun to putter around and learn with. The second one is a whole different story. Behaves more like an Msrx: erratic, tail has a left drift that will steadily turn the whole thing 180 degrees if you just watch it. Give this thing just a touch of throttle on the ground and it will roll right over. Left. On the ground. You have to push through that with a lot of throttle to pop it up, much more than the first one. Need to quickly give negative pitch once its up because it's shooting up ... and darting hard left. Off-setting the tail drift requires constant pressure on the rudder, and when you're doing that, the whole thing fights you, with an overall left drift, or sudden dart backwards or forward. I've leveled the swash plate (that was way off). I've adjusted the rudder servo rod, tried sub-trim. That helped the overall left drift, but nothing seems to solve the tail drift. I've adjusted the rudder servo rod as well as adjusted the placement of the servo unit on the boom, but no matter what, once I power up, the heli adjusts the servo so the rudder blades are out of vertical alignment. Seems like what ever adjustments I make, the servo is determined to off-set that, putting the tail fins in a position that pushes the tail to the left. One thing I've noticed is that this heli sits with a left lilt on the ground. Everything looks a little cockeyed , especially the tail unit itself. On the first 130x, the heli sits level .... the second one, right beside it, is off center. It almost looks like the tail boom may have a twist to it. Having two to compare and examine side by side is interesting. Not what I wanted, but interesting. I'm going to call HH tomorrow if I can. |

Update: corrected problems, second one flies great now
Fixed the erratic 130x, now it flies great.
Replaced the two white gears in the tail, dialed the rudder gain down 5 clicks, and replaced the landing gear. Tilt: The landing gear was distorted, and was extended out more on one side. This made the frame, measured from a flat table to the bottom of the frame, sit lower on the left by 1/8". New gear, and it sits level. Tail left drift: The two white tail gear "D" shapes were rounded, but not on the outer part that you can see. Taking them off, I noticed that the inside of the "D" was worn round on the larger of the 2 gears. There was enough catching so that when holding the white gear and turning the main gear gently, you could feel resistance. So I never questioned the integrity of those gears. Once replaced, the left tail drift significantly declined ... AND the feeling of fighting the heli when applying steady correction went away. This fix also corrected the crazy flipping over on the ground. I think when applying power to lift off, the gears were slipping ... Rudder gain: Dialing that down 5 clicks eliminated the remaining tail drift, as well as the slight tendency to drift left overall. So now this one takes off and flies nicely. The grommet mod was just icing on the cake. Interestingly, this one still has the original plastic umbrella gear ... intact and in near new shape. Which is surprising because this one has had more impact with the tail blades rotating than the other one (by far) because of its crazy behavior. The other heli, landed in grass with the spinning tail blades twice, and both times stripped teeth. And the overall wear on the remaining teeth in the gear was significant even after a few flights. |
