Default King 3 main shaft replacement

Could anyone guide me me as to how to remove the main shaft so I can fit a new one. It looks like you have to strip the chassis down completely to get it out.

Default King Main Shaft

This job looks worse than it is. Here are the basics:

1. take the ball links off the the outer swash plate
2. take the screw out of the headblock that goes through the shaft on the head. t takes a 1.5 mm hex
3. remove the head by pulling up off the shaft
4. take the screw out of the main gear. It takes a 1.5 mm hex
5. pull the shaft up about 5 mm and use needle nose pliers to remove the little pin that goes through the shaft and turns the tail belt pulley. Carefull not to drop it, These are hard to get.
6. pull the shaft up and out. Watch out for a bushing between bearing and the main gear. Also hard to get a new one.
7. reverse to put back together.

The only hard part is lining up the one way bearing, shaft and liner when putting back the screw through the main gear. I use a straightened out paper clip.

Good luck. After a few times, this is a ten minute job.

Hi Terry thank you for your reply. I can see this method working for the king 2 but with
the king 3 the pin above the tail pulley seems impossible to remove and replace there is not enough clearance to get at it with pliers.

Terry mentioned using needlenose pliers....and they have to be fairly pointed. My K-3 only has about 1/8 inch of space to maneuver the pin in and out between the frame and the pulley. You can also push it out with a tool of some sort, so one end is sticking way out to grab with the pliers. Another tip put tension on the belt pulley while sliding the mainshaft in or out. Pull tension toward the front of the heli and it will let the mainshaft slide thru the pully much easier

Make believe youre a surgeon doing a delicate operation.

Tweezers! Also, using a towell under the heli might catch that little pin before it goes flying across the room into the abyss never to be seen again!

Watch that little brass spacer under the tail rotor pulley, Put the screw in the main gear then adjust and set the main shaft collar above the upper bearing.

The first time I changed main shaft I took the housing apart, and it was much more work than necessary. Finally, I learned to do it the easier way. exblade's procedure is right on. And, once you do it a few times it becomes much easier.
