How hard to build from kit
I Want a 450 really bad... I'm kind of strapped for cash and so far I'm finding some used blade 450's and Trex 450s that are almost in the price range I'm looking for. But then they got the Trex kits that I probably could afford.... The thing is I havent ever built one from a kit. I've taken apart my sr an rebuilt it several times tho but I'm sure a Trex 450 is a little more intense especially from scratch. How difficult would y'all say the kits are to build? I'm still somewhat new but I'm a smart cookie and pretty mechanically inclined plus my dad builds airplanes all the time so he may be able to give some input as well. I'm sure I could do it I'm just trying to gauge how long it typically takes to get everything set up properly. Any input ? Anyone got one that's ready to go with a Tx, even if it needs a receiver that's cool too.

Building from kit is the best way to go, you learn so much in the process.
It is actually very easy. With the use of the Finless videos a monkey could do it. They are found here on these forums. He has all the trex450 videos you need. He also has "101" videos to teach you about throttle curves and pitch curves, ccpm, gyro setup, dual rates, expo, literally everything you need. Just load up the videos and follow along with your heli kit. If you follow along and do what's in the video you will have a perfectly setup heli. Finless is a great asset to the community and has helped countless newcomers get started on the right foot with a properly built heli, I know this because that's how I started. An align 450 combo is a great kit, go for the sport if you are on a budget. There is nothing wrong with that bird and it's a great place to start learning. If you bump into questions along the way post them up here, there are so many great folks that are always very helpful here on the forum. Don't be afraid of the kit, it really is the best way to learn. Good luck! Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

You can also consider a clone. I own two genuine Align 450 Pros and a clone and the clone flies beautifully. More work on the clone to get everything right but you also learn a lot more in the process. Tarot seems to be the nicest clone at the moment. Building a heli is the only way to get proficient at servicing one. Either way you'll have a blast.

taking your time.and asking questions if you need to.
and taking your time some more and triple quadruple checking everything before flight. good luck you will never go back to a RTF heli.

I would never buy a pre-built heli again. Building a heli yourself is sooo much nicer. I enjoyed it very much, can't wait to build another one Take your time, study the manual before you start and watch finless's video's. The two align kits i've built were a breeze and went together perfect, no issues what so ever. I'd say go for it!

EXI has good customer service, so if you get a bad part in the kit they can send you a replacement. +1 on learning with the kits, and they make great foul weather/winter projects.

+1 for building.
it's a lot more fun than you might think and you will know exactly how to fix your heli when it's crashed. definitely won't buy another rtf or arf again. my own build is the only way to go now.

Not hard at all. Depending on how pretty you want the wiring, you can do it in an afternoon.
The Super Combos are nice, you don't have to worry about all sorts of decisions about electronics, good mid grade electronics that work well with the heli all all there. All you need it the TX, RX, Battery, Charger, and a connector to solder onto the ESC that matches the one on your battery. (There is no standard, so none is included in the kit so you can use your favorite.) The Trex Sport is a good heli if you want to save a couple of dollars over the PRO. It is actually newer than the pro, basically some people missed the wider frame and belt tale of the old SE, so Align came out with a heli with a lot of the improvements they came out with on the PRO, but with the wider body and belt driven tale of the old SE versions. The frame makes it easier to fit stuff on the heli. (I resorted to mounting my ESC and RX on the sides of the frame on my PRO because I was having trouble getting them inside). And the belt tail is a bit more forgiving on your tail blades striking the ground or getting grass tangled in them or such. Tarot seems to have a good clone, I have bought some of their parts and they look and perform quite well. You might look into that as well.

Build it mate, you will get a great feeling of achievement from it. It’s not that hard, if you know which end of the screw driver fits the screw head you are on a winner. I have just built the 450 sport super combo. You really do get to know the machine a lot better this way too. You can fit most cables inside the sport; I only had the ESC running back to the Rx external because it’s too short to run up and over the motor.
Do it mate, you’ll love it |

I'm all for building from scratch, you certainly learn the ins and outs of the mechanical workings of a cp heli. The one thing that stands out to me is that you said your on a budget. If that where my position, I would certainly consider a pre built used heli off of the classified lists here. You can get a lot more bird for your dollar if you choose wisely and buy something someone else is trying to get out from under. There are many great choices here for great prices. You need to be careful when buying used. You don't want to end up repairing your "new to you" heli right from the get go. But I will say, aside from a very small list, the majority of members here are very honest about the condition of their helis and so If I where you, I would consider buying used. You will get far more for your money.
Just my opinion though. |

I just built my first kit and its going fairly well. Just one or two things I didn't like, but besides that it has been pretty great.
