i would like to say ...told you so....i would like to talk about a weekend i went to see irwin at quick world wide, caz i had some quick helis, and i remember him pulling me aside and uncovering a heli he was designing with a large 4 stroke engine......and he told me never to say anything on the forums about it,,,,,,but now i see a need to say so, R.I.P. irwin, just a weird thought came up.....he might have been before the times...

but that guai looks awesome, might not be able to afford one, but i would love to see on up close

helicopters have keep my head straight thru all the sit life has put across me, and i will hate the day i cant put them together or fly anymore

I think it would be quite interesting to build and fly however I'd have to sell my turbine to fund it.............and I like my turbine

Maybe if you ask nicely they will lend you one for a review?

The sound is amazing. It sounds like it's just idling!

It's unfortunate they won't sell it as an airframe. Shrunk down to a 750-800 it might be a fun heli to fly. I've been just short of harrasing the sales rep from gaui and they are set on selling it almost ready to fly.

they have sold very few F-50 engines (airplane version) so I really doubt they get success with this monster.

this engine would be nice for a large scale heli with main rotor diameter up to 2.5m. but 4000$ is twice the real cost of this kit

I think it was made for industrial use anyway multirotors are growing quickly and are much more eficient.

Multirotors are NOT more efficient. Not at all. And there isn't a single multirotor in existence that can fly over 2 hours with even a 100 gram payload.

There are some people messing around with gas powered multirotors, but this is just silliness.

I'm getting a lot of interest on these things from people building UAV's. 4 people have contact me about putting Pixhawk on them, and one is slated to send me one to do it.

I do have a lot of questions about the about the engine. Especially the vibrations from the 4-stroke.

Anybody have any info on the Hobbywing UBEC they are using? I'd be interested in it for some other projects, based on Hobbywings quality/value position. But I searched a while back and couldn't find any info.

I do know that one of these has crashed already, unknown cause. It was being flown with a Skookum 540 and a Spektrum radio system. It was hovering about 1-2m, and then suddenly went full negative collective and slammed into the ground.

The Skookum datalogs supposedly don't show anything, because they only log 7 minutes, and then instead of wrapping around, the logs just stop. Seems they only considered typical electric heli sport operation when they designed it?

Desert Aircraft imports true plane version of the F50. There is a thread on FG with running videos. It will shake a lot more than you are used to with Zenoah.

I don't know how many plane versions they have or will sell. 50cc 4 stroke gas airplane engine are actually a crowded field with Saito, O.S., Moki, Roto, Kolm and some Chinese HK brands all making engines.

DA do not even promote this engine because they get better profit by selling two DA35 which give out much more power
just because you find it a beatutiful engine and it's being imported by DA does not mean it will last longer or will be more reliable.

the few videos you have seen on youtube are mostly from Asia...
same price as the reliable Valach 60 and Kolm 50 so why would people get an unknown 'made in china' engine ? everything from GAUI is highly overpriced.

We are going way off topic here but anyway....

I dont think anyone claimed that the Gaui F50 would be more reliable or powerful than a DA 2-stroke. In the airplane world its a totally different market. People that buy gas 4 strokes are looking for the sound and the look, usually to go on scale type aircraft. You dont really see anyone buy them to put on an 3D aerobatic ship, and thats not what they are marketed for.

Im with you on the fact that I would go for a Kolm or Moki before this one as those are known engines with a proven track record and for not much more money the Kolm is an absolute work of art. I once priced one out in fact to go into a scale WWI Albatros D.V biplane fighter... The sound would have been nearly perfect but alas it just did not fit. That one gets a British Laser twin glow 4 stroke instead. Which is a similar work of art just using more expensive fuel

BTW, in the states the Gaui is not the same price as Kolm (I got quotes for both) ...
  • Gaui is $899 from DA and they sometimes do free shipping deals.
  • Kolm EZ50 was quoted at $1350 shipped (imported via Vogelzang) when the Euro was close to $1.35, so its probably around $1100-$1150 shipped today

I just happen to have a GX9 in the shop now which I will be starting work on to get Ardupilot running. Somebody else did the autopilot physical installation and did an incredible job.

Well... so far... the muffler has fallen off during ground testing. The nut at the front is very poorly welded inside, and it just cracked off. And the starter motor, while cool, is barely capable of turning it over vs. compression and struggles badly. Usually takes a few attempts as there's a reset-able fuse protection that keeps tripping out.

And now the GX9 suffered from a stuck exhaust valve. At first I thought the conrod was bent, but apparently this is a common problem with the GX9. Took the heli apart to get the valve cover off and unstick it.

And Canberra UAV used a GX9 to compete in the Medical Express UAV competition this past week. The engine quit during their attempt and the helicopter crashed.
