Default Big mistake today. lots of blood and pain. VERY GRAPHIC WARNING.

I'm a helicopter guy and I'm always very careful . I had a chance to get a big plane for a good deal so I went for it. I was setting it up on my tx. Was doing the throttle learn and must have had the throttle reversed and fine at full throttle but pulled the stick back it spooled up. And yes the prop was on. (Big dumb add moment ) I was kneeling next to the front and and went it spooled up it was like a cheese grader I saw the blood hit the ceiling be for I felt the pain. Looked down and saw a lot of blood I was home with the kids. 4 and 6. I took off to a neighbors house to take me to the er. It took 50 staples and 30 stitches I'm my muscle and 55 internal stitches. The tendons did get hit but won't know if I will need surgery until next week. And yes the wife hated this Hobbie before. And now real hates it . She is not happy with me at all. Well I learned a lesson. No mater how many times you have done something always slow down and think first .. I always take the blades off the helicopters when I work on them. But did not think about the prop on the plane. Say a prayer for me that I can walk normal again.

WOW man first off glad your alright (sorta). i had a similar incedent with on of my first large planes. Lucky enough i wasn't in front of it and it just shot full bore into the wall. Actually punch a hole in the drywall. Definitely lesson learned.

We all need to remember no matter how long we have been doing this things like this can happen. Whether it be freak of nature or factory defect.

Hope everything turns out already buddy and you'll be running through the fields to grab you crashed helis soon enough

Ouch. Sorry to see you go through this and I wish you a speedy recovery with full functionality again. Let this be a reminder to us all to slow down and think of safety first. Sometimes we get complacent and forget how dangerous our hobby can be.

Regarding your wife being angry towards you, I hope she can be more supportive while you are going through a difficult time. After all, it was an accident. Not like you woke up and wanted to slice your leg up.

Best wishes for you, fellow freak.

Wow… that sure changes the outlook on the day I had! Very sorry to hear about your accident, and I hope that you make a full and speedy recovery with that.

Unfortunately, the hobby that we partake in involves large spinning blades, and accidents like this can and do occur. It's all too easy for us to become complacent or overlook a safety related detail. And even then, a lot of the time, it's only the heli, plane, or other inanimate object that takes the brunt of it.

Thanks for the safety reminder, and take it easy with the recovery.,,

Wow, I'm sorry. Best wishes for a speedy and fully recovery!!

And thank you for the reminder. As was said, we all need to remember to be careful. It's terrible when something like this happens, but if sharing your story can help one other person avoid an incident, that's something.

Default Prop Cut

Hey Chris,
Heard about your accident, tried to call this morning. Sorry about your injury. Sometimes hobby can be dangerous with one mistake. Hope your wife can understand it can happen and not try to discourage your future activities. Hope you get well soon and not require surgery. DB.

Sorry to see this Chris. Wishing you a speedy recovery, or at least as speedy as something like that can heal.
It's going on almost four weeks since I had surgery on a cut tendon on my right middle finger from a work related injury. I'm all too aware that accidents happen in the blink of an eye when least expected. Mine is a small injury compared to yours but I feel your pain and wishing you the best. Hopefully your wife will understand eventually.

Prayers said Chris. Things do happen. Your leg is going to be fine. But those two kids are still going to run you ragged when they get another couple of years older.

wow that truly sucks dirt. Sometimes in our anticipation we often overlook fine details which prove to be dangerous and or destructive to our heli and or plank or us. One loose ball link on my 300 a few days ago could have proven to be disastrous, (rpm is about 4000).

Last spring early summer a veteran rc plank flyer in Germany lost his arms when he started a 1/4 scale plank without tying it down, he throttled up while standing in front of it and must have tried to hold it back by grabbing it.

A ,long time ago I made a fan boat, 049, and didn't use a dowel to start and didn't have an extended tab out back to hold it with. I had to reach under the spinning prop by half inch and got too close hitting my thumb. I blunted the tips and leading edge before that so it didn't slice me.

Blades+flesh=mince. STAY AWAY from them.

I'm surprised you didn't tie down the plank before running the motor.

ALWAYS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK SERVO DIRECTIONS, ALWAYS.

OUCH!!

Hope for a speedy recovery and complete healing!

As an old nitro guy, years ago when I built my first electric plank, I was wiring and setting up servos, etc.
Not even thinking, I hit the throttle and freaked out as I watched my new model shoot off my bench and slam into the wall across the room, (nitros and gassers that I was familiar with won't do this) luckily I was not in front of it!!

We have had several severe injuries at our facility over the years. When one older club member ran his fingers thru an AX 55 turning an APC prop, my immediate concern was that he was going to have a stroke or heart attact. You could see him going into shock as he turned white.

This event led to 10 club members getting their Red Cross CPR and first aid certifications. We are currently working to secure an AID unit. We are hopeful that the local hospital will make a donation, but new versions can be purchased for under $2000.
