Default replacing tail drive gear assembly

Experts

I recently purchased a new main gear and auto rotaion tail gear, it is of the newer style so I also needed to change the tail drive gear assembly. Is there a video available on how to change the tail drive gear assembly unit? If not is anyone aware of step by step instructions. I don't want to screw anything up... I have the old removed from the frame however I still need to remove the unit from the bearing case, and re-install the new into the bearing case.

trex se v2

Thanks,

One of the least fun things to do on a Trex450 IMO.

You just need to remove the upper pulley gear by tapping the shaft out or better using a pinion/gear puller. Easier said than done.

Then you have to tap the old bearings out of the bearing blocks if you are replacing those also.

Then reverse the steps to reinstall.

Many people have gone to an assembly that utilizes a pulley gear with a set screw to eliminate that part of the problem. MicroHeli makes a nice one.

Not sure if that answers your question but it's all I got.

yes, that answers the question...

I have know clue why it comes with the pulley attached when it needs to come off to get the asm in place anyway? It is a PITA to get the aluminum pulley off even using the puller. I don't want to screw up the new part I bought

MicroHeli sells just the aluminum gear/pulley with a set screw for about $11.
Might be worth looking into.

A while back I bought the HDX assembly from HeliDirect.
I haven't tried it yet and I've read there's some fitment issues but when needed I'll try the set screwed pulley that comes with it.

My buddy had a puller(GSM?) unfortunately the slot was to narrrow to directly around the pulley so... we tried under the bearing which slid the bearing however we were never able to get the pulley off. I went and bought the eflight gear remover which was a better match for pulling however I am not sure if we damaged something but I could not get the gear off.

Since we ended up scraping the 9.00 unit, we experimented a bit. I heated the aluminum gear and it came off easily. This whole experience makes me think that there has got to be a better way?

I sure wish there was a video around should how this can be done easily. I will try once again now that the gear puller fits around the gear itself, if it does not come off with a fair amount of force I'll stop. Until I am able to get another asm, I'll be using the search option here and google to see what others have done. Our local hobby store had the pulley you talked about, it was 15... Now... I'll be happy to spend 15 on the pulley but I need to figure out how to get the old one off without damaging the unit itself. Maybe they sell it with the bearing blocks assembled... In the long run it may be cheaper...

9.53 for the unit I damaged(gear is still good and I have 17 into a puller.
This is just not right...

Looks like CopterX agrees with you...sold with the top bearing/block installed.

Have any experience buying the parts directly from Hong Kong, China, etc?

Buying from ehirobo, hobbycity etc. is usually not a problem aside from the occasional slow shipping.

Buying from ebay can be a crap shoot, and know that the parts may or may not be of equal quality to Align, CopterX, EXI etc.

For an important part with bearings, like the tail drive gear assembly, I think I'd buy a known and tested part.

I am going to buy the more expensive unit, however I think I want to order one to take a look to make a comparison.

I doubt that there will be any problems with the gear coming off, those guys are on there tight ...I think I'll mention to the local hobby store that they need to carry a different part,
the assembled unit. I'll need to wait for the mail man now...
