Default dang stock motor, aka need new motor

Well my new to me one flight 450x, while sitting waiting for a new tail hub I decided to do motor locktite mod. Took it all apart and the motor shaft is all scored up, time for a new motor.

I wonder if jb weld would do, instead of locktite?

I guess it gets to sit a few more weeks, as I get some spare cash and wait on shipping

E-flite 450H motor. Two bucks more than a stock motor and a WHOLE lot better.

Any need to also update the ESC when you do that? Or is the 450H okay with the stock ESC?

Runs fine with the stock esc.

Thanks!

One last question. What's a good pinion to use with the 450H in order to keep the same sorts of headspeeds that you get with the stock 440H and it's pinion?

Okay, I found this on-line headspeed caculator:

http://dhrc.rchomepage.com/calc.htm

and then after doing some Googling to get the specs for everything, I came up with the following:

In stock form, the 450X has a 140 tooth main gear, a 10T pinion, and a 4200Kv motor. That gives a maximum theoretically possible headspeed of 3330 RPM.

With the 450H being a 3600Kv motor, it looks like I want a 12T pinion because that will give me a theoretical maximum headspeed of 3425 RPM

That's right. It also depends on whether you run 325mm or 350mm main blades and whether you plan to run a headspeed governor.

But yeah, with 325mm mains most people run 12T ungoverned and 13T governed with that setup...EFlite H450 or Scorpion 2221-8 @ 3600kv on 3S.

If you run 350mm blades you can get away with 11T ungoverned and 12T governed since the blades provide more lift and also to keep the flight times up with the increased drag.

That calc you referenced is cool. It has a lot going on with that page. For another option, the one most of us have been using for years is the one by Fredrik Melin (aka Mr. Mel). It's good because it's fairly simple and has options for different governors. It also takes into account battery drain throughout the flight when running ungoverned. He has a mobile version for iPhone and Android which is kind of convenient if you want a quick reference without a web connection.

It does work very well with the E-flite 450H. I had my stock ESC pop on me when I was still running the stock motor. And, that was after about 125 flights on the heli and running a second stock motor which didn't have many flights on it at all.

Very interesting.

Wouldn't you also want to stretch the tail if you ran 350mm blades?

Right, you'd definitely need to stretch the tail to run longer blades. Most of us are using the Lynx stretch kit for that.

okay, cool. thanks!

I'm going to start out ungoverned on the stock ESC and then start saving up for the CC Edge Lite 50 (probably for next flying season...).

I had 120 flights on the stock motor and stock ESC. The motor died and I recently switched to a 450H motor as recommended here.

Flew it for the first time today.
-stock ESC
-12T pinion.

Observations
- Heli has much more pop. Responds much quicker to collective changes
- forward flight speed is increased but not dramatically
- motor temp seems slightly cooler than the stock motor
- ESC temps feel about the same.
- flight times same

Nice! Did you use the stock motor mount as well?

Same here on the stock m.m but I had to shim the motor up a tad cause it was barely grinding on the top of the main gear.I used the small washer that goes behind the main grip screw for that.Worked perfect!I`m also using a Rino harden steel 12t pinion in mine, might be why I had to shim it...not sure
