Hey, thanks McK, appreciate that.

Would either of you be willing to edit your posts in this thread just the clena it up? (.....)

I want the data to be transparent and not tainted by any perceived he said/ you said postings.

No problems if you don't want to edit them - just a polite request. I will then remove my posts too.

BTW - good luck with everyones searching. I'm keen to really understand the data.

Thanks, thats really sad someone so young was just there to watch these exciting machines being flown, i started flying at age 9 with my dad we still both fly together today i have had to run from a few out of control planes in my life it was scary. I was flying once and had to run lucky got to safty and found my plane and saved it before it crashed.
I was unlucky enough to see a fellow club member get hit by a plane at a electric event i put on so lucky the plane was a pusher and the guy had no serious enjury some ice on his neck few hours he was ok. Could have been much worse that was so scary to watch he was flying a plane also i ran to try save it before crashed but didnt make it in time

These are fun adult toys but can be dangerous

Added 3 more incident.involving bystander at museum RC heli demo. Unknown size of heli .
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/04/...copter-blades/

This one was a reporter at an event. 700 nitro
http://www.*******************/derri...n-philippines/

Cameraman at what looks like a private field. TX Rex 250
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUebBDxa-6U[/ame]

This one cannot be verified at to when, how, where. (Warning - graphic picture). Anyone have any firm data on this???
http://www.sgrid.com/forum/showthrea...C-heli-graphic

Remember need data on..
any RC Heli death to anyone (pilot, mechanic, official, public, spectator.;
any injury to non pilot of RC Heli (as pilots we should know and accept the risks)

So far organised events look like the biggest risk. Does anyone know when the spectator netting was introduced? (would be good to see the spectator data dry up from that date).

chance of being killed by RC heli on above data = 1 chance in 4,106,240
I got a C in college statistics but...

Your math is good but your conclusion is not. The chance of ANY ONE PERSON getting killed is 1 in 4,106,240. If you say that a member of the public will see an average of 5 flights in their lifetime (this seams reasonable if we cut out 'undeveloped' populations), then a member of the public will have a 5 in 4,106,240 chance of death or 1 in 821,248. I actually believe that of the 7 billion people in the world, the average number of flights that they will see is less than one. If we guess 0.1 then a member of the public would have a 1 in 41,062,400 chance of death by RC heli in their lifetime.

Since there are more than one guesses here (flights per day and number of flights a person will see per year) we need to do the math a different way.

Number of deaths per year globally: 56,597,034 source: http://ask.yahoo.com/20051128.html
Number of deaths per 9 years: 56,597,034 * 9 = 509,373,306
Number of deaths in 9 years: 4
509,373,306 / 4 = 127,343,326

Therefore, the chances that a member of the public will die due to an RC heli is 1 in 127,343,326. This is number that you should compare with other global death rate statistics.

We can calculate the same for USA
Deaths per year USA: 2,437,163
Deaths per 9 years: 2,437,163 * 9 = 21,934,467
Number of deaths per 9 years: 1
So USA chances are 1 in 21,934,467

Here's the problem. Our sample size is very small. 9 years and less than one person dies per year. We also don't take into account that people were flying before 9 years ago (with no deaths but no internet) and that the hobby has been increasing in popularity (I'm assuming).

We should all agree that it is extremely unlikely for a member of the public to be killed.

I'd like to know the chances of any one flight ending in a crash. 1/30, 1/50? Too hard to estimate I think.

Any idea if there is a pattern of how the injuries occur?
I wonder if hauling a couple of plastic folding tables over to the field, setting them up sideways on the ground in front of us as a portable 'berm' of sorts, would keep errant helos spinning along the ground from taking out lower extremities?
or are most injuries from the helo dropping out of the sky?
I am NOT gonna wear Kevlar.

Speaking of sports equipment and Oz, them football pads everyone wore in Mad Max were awesome - especially on that hottie wahine with the bow - too bad they offed her in the big chase scene...
And they even had an... an... an autogyro (totally random, gratuitous reference to anything rotary-wingish, just to make it seem appropriate for this website)

Default Sad story from Malaysia

So, posting here too, if this topic could be made sticky and if the first post could be updated.

It would be easier to plan safety actions or understand what is important from safety point of view if there are statistics available about the reasons of the accidents.

I've tried to edit the first post but cannot do so - I think the time has expired.

Default Helicopter injuries, or deaths to public or non pilots.

The above post is considered to be a self inflicted tragedy from the evidence at the scene, he was alone. There's a thread specifically for him in the safety section with info where to donate

Sadly true.

I cant edit the original post - so re doing the entire post is a bit of work.

Still the odds are RC is still very safe, just wish it was 100% so.
