Yep, still using the fly bar with an ALIGN GP780 gyro, that's why I posted my question here figuring a lot of fb nerds would see my issue.

Along these lines, I have a question regarding FBL. I'm wanting to get back into larger helicopters, i.e. 500 size or bigger. I haven't flown anything but micros since I got rid of my Century Swift a few years ago. Never flown an FBL and am thinking of a TREX 500. Question, is there any programming in the TX specific to the FBL system? I have a DX7 that I bought the day they became available and it obviously wouldn't have the necessary programming. I understand the need for a 3 axis gyro and that Spektrum makes a RX with it built in. I wouldn't be in a position to buy a new TX as well and in that case would be limited to a FB heli. Or maybe I should just go with a FB model since I'd save some money there. I'm not a 3D pilot, FF and basic aerobatics.

I can only speak for the BeastX fbl unit, which is basically what Spektrum use in their combined unit, and one of the good things about it is that all the configuration is done in the fbl unit, not in the transmitter. So if your Dx7 is controlling your flybarred heli okay, it'll also be good for the BeastX and its variants -- and probably for many of the other brands too.

Hi Mike, you don't need a new radio, the DX7 is totally capable to be used with any modern FBL gyro. I have my DX7se moded with lipo, gimbal bearings and teflon tape for the throttle stick smoothness and it feels great. It lacks switch interchengeability like newer radios however its more than enough for FBL gyros. In fact many of the settings are now implemented directly into the gyros itself like the type of swash (may ask you to use 90º swash setup in the radio, instead of 120º for example) or servo subtrim. Most modern gyros would accept a couple of Spektrum satellites so no need for a separate receiver but you still can have it if you are using Futaba RX for example.

I have tested it with Align 3GX, Spartan Vx1e and Ikon/Brain gyros. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input guys. Like I said being new to FBL I wasn't sure if there was an issue using an older heli radio and I'd really rather not have to upgrade an otherwise perfectly functional radio. Now it's just a matter of which heli, I'm thinking TREX500L Dominator since it 's their current model in that size. I see that the Pro is also available for about the same price but it's a few years older so not sure if it would make sense to go that route as far as parts availability and performace.

I wonder if you are still going to look forward to it after you fly it with the 3GX.
