450 tweaks and mods
I have an Align 450 Sport V2 that I just went around the block with and want to share a few things I ran across along the way and hopefully get some feedback and pointers for a better flying experience for all with 450's.
Being my first build, I felt it went pretty darn well. Got rid of the tail wag by, lowering the gain to 27. Which I will up a bit as I have some tail drift and adding the foam tape to the gyro. I really wish Align would not send the head assembled as I assumed it was properly put together. It was, except for the lack of loctite on the feathering shaft screws. So yeah, that really sucked when I blew my blades off. So attention to detail is the name of the game. I should have checked assembled parts more carefully. Tail boom was next to go. I assumed that the 8 screws around the tail block held the boom like a clamp. Wrong. They only hold the block. Not tighten the boom. There is no way to hold the boom in a fixed position. I drilled a small hole in the curved top of the boom block. I then set the belt tension, took it back to the drill press and drilled a small hole through the tail boom in the block. The belt is turned sideways right there, and after testing to see how far I wanted to put the screw through, I was done and confident my tail ain't goin nowhere. I think the first thing I did was put 500 skids on. I like the little bit of added weight right under and I like the tail up higher off the ground. After spending the last year flying my dual esc 200 SRX, This bird is so much more awesome, I can't wait to spend time with her with confidence. Some amazing flyers out there with these so keep posting those vids. I would add pics but not allowed yet. Cheers. So I think my first post to Helifreak |

Some good lessons learned... don't be too hard on yourself... we all have learned these lessons the same way you did!
You can wrap a piece of tape around the boom before you slide it in the mount to increase the "grip" a bit... "Pinning the Boom" is a tried and true mod that I've been doing for quite sometime! Many times, the critical mechanical components are pre-assembled to serve two purposes... 1, it ensures that all the parts are there; and 2, it enable them to do a quality check and ensure that all the parts fit together nicely. You should always take everything apart to triple check all the components are there and then properly lube and lock-tite it all back together.

I soak the feathering shaft in alcohol and run rolled up gun cleaning patches over the threads in the feathering shaft. That's the last thing I want to get hit in the face with when I'm looking at my blade tracking is a CF blade spinning at 3500rpm. Any oils will keep Loctite from doing it's job so you want to make sure all threads are clean. The existing tail system is sufficient it's not going anywhere there's no need to drill or pin the boom. I haven't heard of anyone ever spinning a tail it rarely moves in a tail strike. Both ends are keyed so they can't spin when they are clamped down. Enjoy the Sport I had a blast for 4 years with mine before selling it on ebay for almost what I paid for it.

Actually theres a thread of a guy that managed to spin his tail on his 450L 90 degrees. Not too sure how it happened but he's got a pic of it on the there.

Yeah I don't know how he would do that unless he clamped the boom in with the key slot in the boom not lined up. Up until this season all I've flown was Align and I've never experienced it without a crash.
