It was done freehand with little dagger strokes starting in the center with each color and then working outwards in the swirl pattern. Then I went back between the first layer of colors with a slightly darker one for some highlights. Then I highlighted with white strokes. I practiced it on a paper plate one time and then just went for it. It was actually one of the easier paintjobs I've done since it was mostly freehand.
