Flybarless X5 Photos, Files and Setup Notes
Hi guys!
There's obviously lots of interest in running the Gaui X5 without a flybar. It occurred to me that a sticky would be a great place to consolidate our findings. So .... here we go! Post your flybarless X5 photos, files and setup notes here! If you have questions regarding a fbl X5 feel free to post those here too. It doesn't matter which system you fly. We're not looking to answer any questions about which system is best. If you feel strongly about that and need to say so - please, start another thread. The goal here is to be helpful. If you are new to fbl, there can be a bit of a learning curve. Some frustration in the beginning should probably be expected. Hopefully we can keep the difficulty to a minimum and maximise the fun. Peace out!

This is certainly not necessary for vbar 5.0 but, if anyone's interested, it this does show that the X5's head geometery is nearly ideal for flybarless relative to the Mikado reference.
The inner swash radius is roughly 22.75mm, the outer swash radius is roughly 40.5mm, main grip radius is roughly 31mm. All measurements taken 90* to mainshaft. Link to tool: http://www.vstabi.info/en/geometry I'm also finding that an 13mm tail servo arm gives me CCW/CW of roughly 60/60. The swash servo arms will need to be in the 18 to 20mm range for vbar. Mine work well at 18mm. The two captures show data for +/- 11 and 12* of pitch.

My setup:
Scorpion 4020-910kv Stock ESC soon to be CC Ice 100amp BLS451's on cyclic BLS251 on tail Mikado vbar 5.0 Std FES head w/black dampers Align 520 cf mains soon to be Edge 523's Stock tail blades I'm running +/- 12* of collective and 8* of cyclic at 2500 w/14t pinion. Performance is supurb! Nearly on par with my Logos with maybe a bit more pop. I am managing 5 minutes from 6s Turnigy 30c 3300's but performance at 4 minutes is certainly not what it is at 2 minutes. Gov mode on the stock esc did not help much. I'm confident that the Ice 100 and some new lipos will improve that significantly. I should have some 6s Hyperion 35c 4200's within the next week. I'll report my experiences thereafter. My vbar 5.0 file is attached.

X5 & beastX
Stock motor+ 15t Stock ESC Governed at 67 & 72% MKS DS 670 x3 MKS BLS980 on tail which is now dead so I use InoLab D261 (No joke) On 67% gov I get 6min of smooth 3D Flying (mostly piro maneuvers) On 72% I get 4 - 4:30 of hard flying.

Gaui X5 FES = A GOOOOOOD TIME!!!
BeastX Scorpion 4020-910KV Stock ESC BLS950's Cyclic @ 6V DS650 Tail Edge FBL 523mm Main Blades KBDD 85mm Tail Blades Red Dampeners 15t Pinion 4000mAH 30C Lipo's 6.30min Sport Flying & Light 3D Tips: The black dampeners work well with the standard blade sizes - 500mm. If you are going to use Edge 523mm Main Blades, install the red dampeners to minimise chance of a boom strike. (Advise from Gaui Team Pilot) If you are experiencing a wobble on the skids, chances are your headspeed is too low for your pinion size and dampener type, so up your headspeed. (Ask me how I know) Do not cable tie BeastX servo cables or keep them bunched up and cable tied in the airframe, resonance from the frame will be amplified down the wires and into the BeastX controller. I got a longer Jesus Bolt, as the one supplied was just a little too short for my liking. (See last attachment - 5mm longer than the bolt supplied and a chunkier head) Last edited by g-bru; 10-03-2010 at 10:01 AM.. |

terrabit, just had a look at your file and a few questions.
Firstly noticed you have 0 servo trim.Did you level the swash via the links and got perfect 90 on the servo horns??? Also my collective and cyclic figures are different. I got 100 on the collective(gives me 13.5 up/12.9 down) which i'll tame in the tx. I think the difference is the trim i added to get the servos at 90. Cyclic i got 8 degrees at 95. Using the long balls though. Just trying to understand how all the differences work and what the vbar software looks for. Vas

well she's all set for the maiden tomorrow.....i think
Managed to squeeze all the wiring and step-down in, moved my receiver pack to the rear to help with balance. For some reason this one is ever so slightly nose heavy. Weird as the newer canopies aren't as stiff / heavy as my first. First weighs in at 115g, the newer at 84g.But am running a CC Ice 100 which is heavier.Hyperion EX packs despite the numbers actually weighed in a few grams less than the CX.But did notice that with the batt/motor saver that my packs sit a little further forward than where i had originally placed. Did the vib log thingie spin up(no blades) test and nothing major to report. No fiddling,no swash moving, all numbers low. So we'll cross the fingers and see how we go with my first attempt at FBL. Oh and have to take a family photo.I do really like the clean ,no flybar look. Vas

I zeroed out the trim settings for the purpose of this thread. My actual trims are quite low at six and less. I tuned my collective for +/- 12* and 8* of cyclic. You can adjust for even +/- in the trim tab. Also, be sure to adjust the cyclic ring so you don't have any binding at max throws. The long balls may be fine. You just want the value entered under the cyclic tab to be between 80 and 110 at 8*. I am anxious to hear your impressions. Please keep us posted!

What damper rubbers are you guys using? The softer or the harder red ones?

I run the harder red dampeners for Edge 523 blades, if you are running stock 500 blades then the black dampeners are fine.

I think it depends on what headspeed you want to run. If you are running high headspeed, the harder red dampers would be best. If you are running lower headspeed then the softer black dampers might better. I am running the soft dampers at around 2500 with good results.
