KASAMA Srimok Electric Build Videos

Khun Kasama was kind enough to send me an immediate pre-production kit of his new Srimok Electric so here's my build experience. They are just awaiting arrival of canopies and manual before shipping so mine came without - which makes the build a bit interesting Anyway most of the neat bits like head and tail, main shaft and gears are the same as the nitro so my old manual helped there and the rest had to rely on studying photos off the web!

The frames are neat - very compact and light all in one piece. The lipos are separately accommodated for, under and in the front of the heli - the front battery tray is adjustable fore-and-aft to allow for different CG - good thinking.

Needless to say the standard and engineering of the parts is very high - some of the low stress CNC parts feel lighter than previous and I wonder if Kasama has chosen a lighter alloy for some of these. The main gear is machined mod 1 120t which coupled to the supplied 12t pinion makes for a gear ratio of 10:1 so motors in the early 500 kvs would be ideal.

Frame assembly straightforward - put in the bottom battery tray although it will need to be removed to insert the motor - only two M3 bolts !

Same one way assembly for the main gear but this is somewhat larger (120t vs 99t) than the nitro - I like the black plastic struts - skids are the same high quality polished alloy as the nitro.

Nice canopy! I like the fact it covers the complete frames! Really neat

In goes the frame bling - mast bearing blocks (thrusted of course!) boom mounting blocks and the engine mounting system - this latter accommodates 25-30mm M3-4 so should fit most motors although height may be a limiting factor especially for tall motors like the Neu inrunners.

Like the nitro version the motor mounting allows for lateral flexing of the frames without binding on the pinion by incorporating the swash-ball type mount together with o-ring dampeners. Sorry the video turned out so big - if any folks have bandwidth limitations let me know and I'll encode a smaller frame size.

Next video is installation of the cyclic servos - these sit in a beautiful CNC tray mounted up on the top of the frames connected via torque tubes to lever arms which hook up to the swash - it's an elaborate system but enable perfectly square geometry to be achieved - not much different from the nitro version - just 2 rubber dampers used for the servo tray rather than the 3 in the nitro.

Hardware is supplied for JR and Futaba servos complete with servo mounting plates and bolts.

Rudder and elevator servo go in next - the rudder is similar setup to last time - the elevator system this time has a sexy CNC lever to take the place of the TT and levers - much more robust

Swash is the unusual design with inner balls pointing circumferentially rather than radially - washout block looks too good for a heli - maybe some designer jewellery - anyway pretty straightforward but a few tips on fit and finish:

Seesaw assembly here - same as the nitro - clever design with 4 options for ball link on the see-saw depending on which way up it goes - together with two positions for the ball link on the washout and mixer arms this is a very tuneable head - I opted for the maximal wimp positions as I found the nitro plenty live enough on these

The grips come ready assembled with bearings and spacers intact so not much to do here - the head comes with an extra pair of 0.5mm shims over the nitro and these fit up the head perfectly - the spindle is 8mm & 92.25mm long - very similar to a number of electric 700s

John, How do the Kasama birds hold in a crash? I was wondering about the servos TT in particular and crash resistance overall??

From experience with my nitro I'd say it's good resistance - the servos get some degree of protection from the disc couplings absorbing some shock - the landing gear mountings could incorporate some degree of breakaway system to prevent the frame being damaged in a heavy nose in smash - I might look at using nylon bolts here.but this is not the sort of helicopter you want to be using as your beater !

Just a note for those of you who plan to install MKS servos i.e. the HV767 servos: The Kasama blue "Futaba" servo horn adaptors fit but just very very tightly. So in order not to stress or break the inside windings in the servos top gear, fit the servo horn adaptor and press it on using a 10-15 mm M2,5 hex screw. Once on unscrew and set the original servo screw.

Thanks for the tip Henrik - wondered what the MKS output splines were ! I actually found that technique useful in mounting the red output horns onto the JR servos too.

Tail assembly pretty quick as the tail gearbox is ready assembled needing only grease to be inserted into the box. Tail linkage same as the nitro with the inclusion of a natty little wrench to screw up the brass slider. Tail rotor also pre-assembled - 2 radial/1thrust bearing - standard issue these days - held together by M3 nyloc nuts on the centre hub so adjustable and no Loctite needed. Slider yoke to grips a bit tricky - have to be put on the correct way but hopefully video will make this clear.

End result is a super smooth easy running tail unit
