When you say you ordered all the new red gears does that include the front drive gear set? If so, you'll have to use the new 102T auto gear and you'll have the new ratio.

Yes I got the 102 autorotation gear & 23t front drive gear. I'm just not sure if i have good tail authority because I had 104/ 22t gears before . I was running 1950rpm Now with new motor 2250rpm

Is anyone using these gears with VBar ??
I'm not having success.
Tail is not spinning smooth and has no command authority.
Gain is around 100% and 2150rpm.

What does tail not spinning smooth mean? Video?
How much work have you put into the tail (smoothness, grease, bearings, etc...)?

This is interesting. I got another kit and it looks like the red gears are now standard.

It's looking certain that the old black gears and the matching 104t auto gear are discontinued in favour of the new low ratio ratio gear set. This is now being stated in some parts listings: http://www.aligntrexstore.com/104T-M...XX_p_2294.html

This is a real shame IMHO because not everyone is interested in flying screaming headspeeds and for those of us who prefer a slightly lower RPM the old gear set was better and was perfectible reliable.

This seems to be a recurring theme with Align. They did the same low ratio tail 'trick' with the 550 and 600 pro and never heeded the endless complaints that followed.

Would it have been too much trouble to keep making both gear sets and let us have a choice?

I think you can also use a 21tooth from the nitro model. That's if the auto gear hangs around...

It's the auto gear that's showing as discontinued. And no, you cant use the 21t spur gear off the nitro, at least not without slotting the holes for the tail mount.

Couldn't agree more. It would be crazy if they only sold the new ratio. Also the 700N uses the 104T gear and surely they can't expect all the nitro blokes to start running 2100+rpm can they? I like align heli's and own multiple sizes but the new ones really lack adjustability and because you can't adjust anything when they force these "upgrade! So you can do awesome sweet 3D at a million rpm" it really annoys me!

That's a very good point! I'm pretty sure that the Nitro cant use the new red gear set off the 700X anyway. The frame spacing between main shaft and tail box must be ever so slightly less on the nitro to accommodate the smaller 21t spur gear that it was designed for. Web sites are listing the new red gear set and 102t auto as a 700N spare, but the official Align data on the new gear set (as I'd expect) doesnt list it as compatible with the 700N

It's a bit of a mess... Luckily i managed to find a dealer here in the UK that had one of the 104t auto gears in stock, so I've bought that along with a spare black front TT gear set. I should be ok for the foreseeable future.

What about running 115 tails on the new ratio can you squeeze those with stock setup and blades or is it a case of needing a longer backend.

There is only 8mm clearance between the stock 106mm tails and the stock 700mm mains, so running 115 tails would be a bit risky, unless you used 690mm blades. You would probably get away with it 99% of the time but the risk of the blades clipping is there.

You can use the 700N tail boom, TT and pushrod to do a mild stretch to make it safe.

Or try to find a 3 bladed tail?

I stripped the black gear on the lower drive gear that rides the autorotation gear. My umbrella gears survived. How did that happen? Almost looks like bad mesh.

Definitely not comforting to see the stronger gears stripped.

I left the maneuver kaos, tail wagged and lost control of the tail

That kind of stripping was most likely bad mesh.
