What nitro bird. are they "under powered"

Ive got a mcpx and 450. Im after a X5 soon and would really like a X7.

But ive found myself wanting a nitro bird for the long flight times and just the coolness of a IC engine. Probaly keep it with a flybar as well.


Say I own a 450 550 and 700 size electric what would be a good side nitro bird?


and are they really that under powered?

get a 50 size, imo.properly set up, no way are they underpowered, and the flight times are longer. my x50 with a ys56 has all the power i could want,

My first Nitro was the 700 and have never regretted owning it. IMO, Nitros are real machines and there's no way I would characterize a 90 size Nitro powered Heli underpowered

How bout you see if you someone will let you fly one of their nitro byrds so that you can see for yourself. What one person thinks of as plenty of power another might consider sluggish.

My only experience with nitro helis are a friends 600n and Hirobo Evo. The Evo definitely felt underpowered (still for nice for sport), the 600n felt lively enough but still a little weaker than any electric I've flown.

700N x 2, bigger flies better. period.

I just received my first nitro kit, the Synergy N5c, and am thrilled with the quality of the kit.

It's a 50 (600) and seems light.

I wouldn't say .50 or .90 size nitro birds are underpowered. But your elevation plays a big part: if your flying @ 5000' above sea level, and the only experiance you have is e-power, the nitro will defanantly feel "softer". But hey if your at sea level... Well that levels the playing field:-)

I still enjoy my flybared nitro birds, it's great to have choices, if you have the itch for nitro I say scratch it! And if you've already been flying a 700e, jump into a .90 :-) Trex 700N maybe...

A well tuned modern nitro engine makes very good power especially at sea level.

the 55/56 and 120/105 and even the older YS91 SR 3DS are all putting out a ton of power.
and when tuned well are plenty to drop a crowds jaw on the ground..

yes, the nitro birds are under powered but only if you compared an over-powered E-machine.

If you have a half decent tuned nitro engine you can still have a lot of fun. Unless you're flying hard smackdown the difference between the average electric setup and nitro setup is minimal.

Remember no one was complaining about power of nitros until a few years ago when people were shoving 12s power and ultra high Kw motors.


I got my first nitro bird about 3 years ago. My electrics have been on a shelf ever since.

I fly both.
And when you log the amount of used power and the duration..
You'll see that a lot of the extra E-power is only delivered in very short peaks.
And the average consumed power is even lower as what a modern 90 ic engine delivers.
The most you will notice the difference is in long speed runs, and short bursts.
Electric motors deliver more immediate torque and can hold that torque very well.

That all said,
A nitro engine can be used as a part of the flying, a instrument to play with together with the blades.
The nitro feel...
Something I personally seriously miss in electric powered helis.
More static and forced to fly smooth.

They are less powerful than electric no doubt, but a nitro still has more power than 90% of pliots know what to do with...

AFAIK a nitro tops out around 4HP ~3kW where electrics are capable of 5kW with bursts up towards 10, if course if you do pull 5kW for any length of time you get 2min flights (and very short lived packs)...

I love my nitros. T-rex 600's are fairly cheap to buy a good quality used one right now. You can get a good deal on parts too. Throw a OS 55 hyper or a YS 56 in it and you will be in love. They are quite a bit cheaper on fuel then the 90 class helis. There is something about a 700 that really gets your heart pounding with all the noise and smoke added in. I just picked up a compass 3d+ and it is substantially lighter then my t-rex's. I can't wait to get it in the air and see how it feels.
