Rave Ballistic 635 Build

I finished off the tail boom last night, added the boom braces. I thought the metal gear mesh was a little tight on the front gears. I tried loosening the boom pinning screws and the tail case and pulling a bit on the boom to loosen the mesh but it didn't make much difference. So I took the boom out and the boom support case apart to try and get it a bit looser but there isn't really any adjustment there because of the boom pinning. Put it back together and greased the metal gears. I guess it is just me being picky.

I put just a tiny bit of Stihl gear grease on the front and rear gears each flying session. Use a small modellers paint brush to get it in the right places. Mine went together with very little backlash. These are nicely machined precision parts.

Is your ballistic 700 running the plastic gears? Will be interesting to get your views on the differences if so.

Where did you get an 11 tooth helical pinion?

I bought mine from Infinity Hobby but they don't show the 11 tooth any more.

I also bought one from Lynx but I haven't tried it. I have the Infinity one on my 700. The Lynx one should be fine as well.

My original Ballistic has the metal gears, the one I just got has the plastic tail gears. Will let you know what I think.

What Lynx Swash are you using ? The one for the Goblin 700 ? This one ? I have a standard Goblin one a guy said would work. Just have to change the balls out he said.

Took apart the used head for my 635 last night. I am replacing the head block (scratched) cross shaft, dampers and all the bearings.

Had to clean up some of the nics in the metal blade holders. Had a hard time getting the new radial bearings in but I got it.

Yes it is the one for the Goblin 700. I ordered the balls for the Gaui X7. It is really nice and solid - puts the stock one to shame.

Do the stock links work? Close to the same lengths ?

Stock links work. I dont think I had to mess with the link lengths. For the balls that connect the swash to the servos I actually used the 120 degree ones off my stock swash. The links line up better with the stock ones. For the balls that connect from the swash to the grips I used the ones from the Gaui X7. The stock rave ones would have been too long.

Definitely worth it - if anything for the peace of mind over the stock swash separating. I have 3 stock ones and they all have some slop between the inner and outer parts. This one has no slop.

Ballistic #2 in mechanically and electronically complete and set up. Just need my new motor shaft to arrive to maiden. Any update on the 635 build?

Yes the Lynx swash looks awesome ! I will look at some in the future. Just I have new stock ones now and a Goblin 700 one as well.

On my 635 I hope to make some more progress today. Will let you know. Takes longer to take it apart, rebuild the parts and reassemble. I have to finish the main head and take apart the one way and check it, oil it, then do the shrink tubing mod.

Did the head block mod. Cut three pieces of 3/8" shrink tubing 23.5 mm long. Put them in the middle of the cross shaft so there is 37.25 mm on each side of the shaft that is bare steel. Then shrink one at a time.

I actually ended up using four pieces of shrink tubing. It going to make taking the cross shaft out of the head harder. I will have dig the dampers out with a pick.

The shaft still rocks inside a little.

I had forgotten about that thread. I originally put on four layers of the shrink tubing but it was too thick to go through the head block so I cut one of the layers off.

I am actually now ready to maiden the heli, installed the motor and finished setting the CG a few minutes ago. The 12T pinion Curtis sent is much shorter than the 13T that came with the heli so I didn't need to install a new motor shaft, good to have a spare around though. Didn't need any of the spacers to fit the motor/pinion to the mount like was needed with the other pinion.
The last thing I am going to do is get some o-rings to put on the thumb screws for the battery tray and canopy to hold them in place and keep them from vibrating off.

I used a slice of fuel tubing on the battery tray screws.

I finished most of the head, installed the main shaft, swash, head block, main gear, tonight. Had to take the new bearings out of one of the blade holders and replace them. It felt rough. I must have damaged it putting it in?

Just posted a picture of the new Ballistic in the "Rave in Living Color" sticky. Maiden went off okay. Motor is getting a little hotter than I like so I need to check that out, everything else seems to be okay.

I received some parts from CY Hobbies. So I got the frame finished and started mounting the servos. Everything looks really good so far.
