back in the protos family, and mini protos build pics
ok, pics later tonight. but i recently sold my 500 to a fellow HF'er thinking i was gonna build a different bird (compass 360 etc.) but, couldnt resist the simplistic protos design and overall quality of the kit, so pulled the trigger on the mini. just completed the frame last night, will post pics later today. happy to be back in the protos family.

Sorry guys, life got in the way.. ive only run into a couple of minor issues during the build
1) the belt tension seems a bit tight (without my really trying to get it to be tight). Well tighter than the protos 500 anyway.. i have about 2-3 mm of movement in the belt per spec but still.. 2) how the heck are you guys mounting the esc, i cant get the capacitors to not hit the bottom of the canopy. its a tight fit. Maybe cut a cooling hole ? 3) the swash follower links were way to tight for my liking. i took a round file and made em smoother. that said, swash is still not smooth like butter on the mail shaft. in other words, i expect it to drop with its own weight when attached to the follower. maybe it will get there after some break in flights. i did oil it a bit but it made no real difference. Anyway, here are some pics so far. Note the 2 screws i had on the bearing blocks were removed later on. |

more pics. i reamed the holes a bit here till it was super smooth on the pin. gonna do the same for the pitch slider.

and more. Any better ideas to mount the esc ? its a very tight fit with the canopy on. Note i havent zip tied the motor wires yet. ideally you want to the motor wires placed so you can easily disconnect the motor and power up the rest of the heli for setup etc.

I have the motor wires coming out the front, esc wires bend down from top touching motor mount.
PIA to unplug, but all fits neatly. Last thingies wanted was motor wires touching can. I did however snap a bullet connector mid flight, have since direct soldered motor to esc

Not good for accessibility, but I did this install after setup. I too had clearance issues with the caps sticking out the frame. Also in the event of a nose crash the esc would take the first hit, not good.
To tuck it further in the downwards bend of the esc- motor wires has to be very narrow, i had to cut a little bit of the esc shrink-wrap and shrinked the 3 wires in place so they do not interfere with the motor mount. Hope this helps dremel |

Thanks for the pics. I have not gotten that far so can't help with the ESC. I have the VBAR Ready one coming and will mount it soon. I have seen the caps hanging down on a lot of Mini Protos builds.

I would avoid any cables touching the motor mount or near areas. Vibrations can cause this:

Someone should make a capacitor cage. The caps are easy to fix in the event of a crash, and cheap, but if they short in a crash I assume the esc would smoke.

got the tail done last night. was a bit tricky to get it all super smooth. After which all i really have left is the electronics setup.. still not sure how im gonna mount that esc, i really like the ability to disconnect the motor as needed without having to take it all apart.

I spent an hour on this literally. Zip method and Allen wrench. Tracking perfectly but I don't think it's fully level

I used to 'drop tool zero pitch' at the 3 swash-servo linkage points. imho, the FBL does a remarkable job of coping with less-than-ideal set-ups if your flying is not requiring super precision (or crappy like mine hahaha). This heli I've put in into soft grass on at least 2 occasions (on the head) and just picked it up and flown again - usually this sort of thing will bend the spindle and linkages to varying degrees, but lol... if it's not bent too bad, it flies. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't happen as frequent as I'd like it to... Blades break boom bends or something else, and then fun's over.
