Default DIY 6v regulator

hey guys I had an align 2 in 1 that failed on me in flight, causing a crash . I was about to by a regulator, but decided to build one , its very simple and cheap to make ( about $8.00 )and works well on my trex 600. I have a 2s lipo and it regulates it to 6V. If anyone is interested let me know, and i will try to post up a schematic, I will post pics soon.

ok here is a pic it contains a op amp, a power transistor ( 10A i think) and a voltage regulator to set you desired out put voltage, and some resistors, the size of the board is a little lesss than 2X2 inches, but it can be cut down. When finished, all the wiring would be encased in glue to guard against vibrations, and the whole thing then placed in heat shrink i will post a pic of the finished product and a schematic

I also had an Align Reg fail in flight downing my bird

I considered building a regulator but was afraid I might mess something up and down my bird myself. I like what you have, nice and simple looking

Just one concern/question. I have a Fromeco Arizona, which has some pretty massive heatsinks, and after a good 10 minutes of swashplate leveling, the heatsinks on it are noticeably warm. Did you have to place some sort of heatsinks on yours which aren't pictured, and have you found heat dissipation to be an issue?

Thanks Norman!, the good thing about building the regulator yourself is for that said purpose,YOU can decided what amp output transistor you want, where as companies that make regulators usually use the cheapest components and bare minimum headroom ( in terms of amp draw) to make maximum profit. The transistor used is either a 10A or 15A so it can more than handle the load. Also if you can put two 10A transistors in parallel if you want, it would hardly take up space, cost next to nothing, and would take the load with a smile. I prefer to build my own since i know the quality would be good and it has a much less chance of failure than a marketed one.Will post a diagram soon, just trying to figure out how to draw one that looks good!

hey guy, anyone know of free software that i can use to draw up the diagram? The software i was told about is excellent, but its not free, and a bit expensive. Also its a switching reg , cause the ic is switching the output on and off

I use the schematic software from these guys: http://expresspcb.com/ It is free and easy to use. If they don't have the part you need it is easy to make it yourself.

thanks dreamer! i will get it done now.. I have to make a correction, even though its switching the out put on and off, an electrical engineer told me that it is really a linear regulator

That's what I was thinking since I'm not seeing any toroids
and other components needed for a switching regulator.

Couldn't tell for sure because there's no part number for the
regulator IC listed, yet. Be that as it may, I'm still interested
because there doesn't appear to be anything in the marketplace
that matches up with what I need. I need 12V @8-10A and
I can't really find a regulator that does that.

All the HV regs I can find are 8.4V or 7.2V switchable.
Their definition of HV doesn't fit my servos, which are 12V servos.
Add to that the fact that I want to run the regulator from 12S (not 6S max)
and the playing field drys up.

I'm just bumping this to the top.

I have a 550 heli and a bunch of new 1800mah lipo that I want to use as power packs vs life (which i don't own any of).

I need to drop the 8.4 down to 6v (want to take my BEC pro out of the mess.

I'm not an electrical engineer or anything but I'm damn handy w/ a soldering iron and have a Frys electronics nearby!
