Default Number of flights on a receiver battery?

Hi Everyone,

New to collective pitch helicopters and I currently have an electric Blade Nano and Blade 230s to learn on. Its been a while since I flew a fix winged plane with Nitro and I've always loved the smell and smoke of Nitro. My question is how many flights or tanks of fuel do you typically get out of your receiver battery when you guys fly? Are the flight times about the same for comparable electric birds?

Thanks,

Mitch

Mitch,

The current load should be about the same for a nitro or electric helicopter, assuming they are the same size. You will have one more servo on a nitro, for the motor.

The best way to know how long a receiver battery will last, is to monitor it with telemetry or with an expanded scale voltmeter under a one or two amp load.

I use BEC's running from the main packs on all of my electric machines, but have to run a separate battery with the BEC's on my nitro helicopters. On the nitros, I check the receiver battery before EVERY flight to make sure it has the capacity to continue. Again, telemetry is very useful here, but only with a load on the servos (moving them all rapidly) to look for a voltage drop which could be fatal in the air.

Ah Clem,

Thank you for the reply. Are you able to typically get more than one tank of fuel out of a fully charged receiver battery on your Nitro machines? I have a DX9 with a telemetry function on it.

I can't seem to remember 15 years ago when I flew fixed wing planes how many flights I could get out of my nitro planes prior to recharging the battery.

Also do most of you Nitro guys use the starters with the battery attached right to the starter? Back in the day I had a flight box w a battery and needed to lug it out and plug my starter banana clips into that in order to start my planes.

My NX7 with a 5000mah 2s will get about 4-6 flights on a charge. I have a few sets of 2s rx packs that's plenty for an entire day of flying.

Thanks Baedarlboo that is what I was trying to find out. What type of starter do you use for your Nitro helis? Do most of the starters today come with batteries attached or is this something the buyer needs to retro fit?

"Are you able to typically get more than one tank of fuel out of a fully charged receiver battery on your Nitro machines? "

I think that the 4-6 that Baedarlboo suggested is about right. Just keep checking the battery every time before a flight.

By the way, I never use the on-board glow drivers that are very popular (I don't like the idea of using the receiver battery to power the glow plug, even for the short time while starting). I still use an external glow driver that I disconnect after starting.

I finally got away from the long cable and banana plugs last year. I have a Sullivan box attached to my starter and use my old, 6S packs that are no longer good for flying to operate the starter. There are some options for using batteries from some brands of power tools also (attached to the end of the starter).

I use a cheap Hobbico 180 starter with a 2000mah 4s lipo Velcro'ed to the starter. Nothing fancy, it works. I also have a dynatron but it's so bulky it sits as a backup in case my main starter dies on me.

Also like Ah Clem stated, you should always check your RX pack before every flight. Although I have telemetry I'm still in the habit of checking it before every flight.

I only run my 123 packs down to about 50%. Get 4 flights. Can recharge twice as fast as you used them flying.

Starter cables are toast. Put the pack on the starter. Starter wands hard to come by.

I absolutely love SwitchGlo Pro ON-BOARD starters. They draw about 1.2 amps running. This is nothing compared to what modern servos draw at their max - maybe 12 amps. Keeps your plug lit in autos. Makes tuning the lower end much easier.
