Need a good modern starter
I currently have a Hobbico Torquemaster 180 with two, almost brand new, 6-cell NiMH 3300mah packs in there. Thing is starting to give up on me. Full charge on the packs and it won't even turn my 0.55 over after two starts. Cutting my flying time really short and its about to be used as target practice.
Anyway, I need a good modern setup to replace it rather than mess with it anymore. I need a starter powerful enough to turn my YS120 reliably. Need a good wand/adapter too. What should I look at there? I think I would want to run it off a 6S pack. I have two 2700mah 6S packs so I'd like it to work with that. Its been a while since i've bought a starter so I apologize for all the questions. Just want something that's going to last me a while and will work well all day at the field.

If you want one that's going to last, buy a Sullivan Dynatron. I run mine on 4S and I've used it to start an OS 55HZR, YS 60SR, YS 91SRX, OS 105 HZR, and YS 120SRX.
I cannot remember what starter wand I'm using. I bought it from HeliProz a couple of years ago. Sullivan makes a wand with a one-way bearing in it. It's spendy but I'm sure it's as high quality as the starter.

You can strap a 4s lipo on that hobbico starter and have no problems. I think I have a 5s on mine.

I have the align starter which works fine on my 91 SRX. ITS nice and compact.
The Sullivan set up is hard to beet though.

+1. I can't imagine using anything else than the Finer Edge setup. Spent the money, and never looked back. It has the goods, and handles well with the pack on the end.

I use a Dynatron on 4S here. 12V gel cell worked great for 50 size but didn't have enough juice for a brand new 91 that was still a little tight. I know a couple of guys who melted the switch contacts using 6S, which I think is overkill.

MDU6 hit the nail on the head. I first got one for my planks and then I liked it so much I got one for helos. that way I don't have to switch the wand/cone back and forth. Its a clean design, well made, easy to assemble, compact, simple to charge with the Makita charger, and plenty powerful. The batteries and charger are not expensive as you can get them on Amazon and/or Ebay.

Yes on the Dynatron, but not at 12V. It won't consistently crank my 91 fast enough for quick starts unless increasing the voltage with the Makita 18V battery. The Makita quick charger does it's job very well and I get a ton of starts on the 3.0Ah pack. It's a handful, but it's steady in the hand.

the makita 18v batteries power my dynatron with no issues. Yes finer edge sells a nice clean adapter plate but if you really want to save some coin order the base plate off the multi tool, cost me under $20aussie for all the parts.

I have the Sullivan starter on 4s. The only time I ever had to use 6s was the first few times I started my 105hzr. After that the 4s has no issues.
I think I am using the hobbico wand. You never want to spin it without putting it into the starter block (doesn't lock in so it will wobble and fly off). It's pretty cheap though and works for me.

I use 2 starters:
1) Align starter (3s) reliable, medium power, just do the job, light, small. Not the best for cranking first start of a brand new .120 engine. 2) Thunder Tiger starter TT2675 Heavy duty 1.80. This one is intended for 12 v but is running now for 2 years on 4s, huge torque, for every .91,.105,.120 engine. The only inconveniente is the size / weight. |
