Default 5.5 blade collision

been having a blast with my new 5.5 today! i got a little carried away with the cyclic rates just to see how fast it could go (extremely fast!) and a main blade collided with a tail blade. small chip on both. i have the rt 515's and kbdd 84.5's. am i not supposed to be running this combo? or did i just push it too hard? seems like the tail is more than completely locked in at 2600 headspeed so i suppose i could file my tails down to 80 or so. anyone else running this combo?

I reverted back to stock tail blades from larger KBDDs (I think those were 84.5mm) after I noticed chipping on the tail blades. You can file them down or get the next smaller sized KBDDs tail blades.

One other thing to note is the 5.5 is harder on the main gear... I was seeing white residue accumulate in the CF frame around the pinion area after every 3 or 4 flights (note that I am running at 100% flat ungoverned). The solution for me was to use the wax based bicycle chain lube White Lightning applied via cotton buds to the gear teeth. This minimized the wear on the main gear and also made the 5.5 quieter in the air.

Thanks for the tip! I image mine is gonna be especially hard on the gear with the monster scorpion in it.

I will check mine-I believe it has the stock length (stock for Atom) 70mm KBDD EE Tail Blades on it.

My 84.5 tail blades were naturally sanded by Mother Earth, so they don't hit my 515 mains.

Cyclo, I use a bike chain lube called "Finish Line" that I bought at a bike shop in my street. It's quite light and fluid, maybe too fluid to lube main gears. But it works wonders with the bearings.

Cheers!

ARM_Coder, I have tried various chain lubes for my bikes (road, cyclocross, mountain). From trial and error the best one is Tri-Flow which I also now use to lube the bearings on all my helis. However for the main gear, the best is the wax based White Lightning as it does not attract dirt at all. It leaves a waxy film over the gear teeth after it dries up.

White Lightning is not as good as Tri-Flow for the chain in my bikes as it gets washed off easily in the rain but for the heli's main gear it can't be beat.

5mm root works oK. KBDD 84's 'fit' and tons of guy's run them trouble free.

Default 5.5 blade collision

I've known several pilots to run a 5 mm root in the tail with no problems. Seems ghetto but it works for me!

Sent using Otto correct.
