Compass Struts: Brittle? (Photo Included!)
Ladies and Gents, there's be a LOT of chatter in the Compass forums lately about the brittleness of the stock struts and how there are more durable struts out there from other manufacturers.
Last year, as some of you know already, there was a run of struts that used a bad plastic compound. This was resolved back in the fall. Recently, we had a small run of issue with the struts again, not on all of them, but a few of them... I just wanted to show you how tough the Compass struts are SUPPOSED to be. This is a brand new 6HV strut ..... Note that it is pressed nearly flat against the table without snapping (I would have pressed it all the way but it's too hard to get a good shot with the camera and press it down at the same time!). The same should apply to other Compass models... If you're having issues with your struts (and you're not flying in sub-zero temps), then I suggest you contact the Compass dealer you purchased from and fill them in on how your struts broke. Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words.... |

Good to know. The set I broke was one of the new pairs that has a slight blue tint in the white color. Guess that my luck. I'll call experienceRc and let them know. Even with the few problems the 6hv has is still kicks a$$

Last week after reading some of the skid threads I couldn't help but check mine. I pushed down on my heli pretty hard and all they did was bend like your photo shows although I didn't push down on it quite so hard.
I also checked the spare set I bought by bending them in my hands and they were nice and springy too. For the record I bought the kit last September and the spare skids in November. Both kit and skids came from Jeff. So if there was a bad batch was it before or after I got mine?

The issues would have been corrected not long before you purchased your kit and struts (I think August / September?)
Regardless, your struts appear to pass the test ... your golden! Last edited by Jeff_Barrett; 03-27-2012 at 04:57 PM.. Reason: Bad Grammar |

Looks painful!

I had a slightly harder than usual landing with the 6hv yesterday from a auto that snapped both sides on the front "new" skids struts, heli looked like a hot rod.
Luckily it stayed up right and the blades didn't touch the ground. Will be doing the splits check when the new ones arrive

Hi,
I too have had problems with skids breaking. I asked my dealer (mikronor in norway) about this and if they still were shipping the old struts, and they said that they just recieved new ones so I ordered a couple. I replaced it, and went out flying yesterday and they broke on touchdown when I was doing an autorotation, luckily it broke on both sides, so the heli didnt flip over or anything.. Now it is still pretty cold in Norway, but the other guys flying t-rex models performed autos also, without the their struts breaking... Anyhow; Is there any way to tell the difference between the "new" and the "old" struts? The ones I recieved are: Struts (3D Plus) 02-0822 (3D+) Does the new struts in the picture have a new part number? |

How cold is it there? It's easy to find out if you're struts are good or not - when you get them, simply perform the test I've shown in the first post of this thread. |

This is how my rear strut was after a while. I took it off and installed it in the front instead, to get better clearance for my tail-blades

Jeff:
I think it was about ~5c. Its cold, but great fun I still have a few bags of struts left from my last order, so i'll put them to the test. (and look for "shinyness".) Too bad the part number didnt change or they made other visual modifications to the packaging so that it would be easier to identify wether its new or old struts. Latte: I acctually tried the boiling trick on the ones that broke, so not really sure that helps alot im afraid, allthough perhaps I did not boil them long enough, or maybe I have too high expectations to what the struts can handle. |

For a while, they were marking the new struts with a blue sticker in the shape of a dot (about the size of a small coin) ... but that stopped a few months later once the old stock was removed.
-5C shouldn't be too hard on the struts ... |
