If this was a thread specifically with the question if the Protos is a good beginners Heli than why is the thread title called "MSH PROTOS vs TREX 450, 500"....
If it will be edited than i agree 100%, otherwise i stay with what i said in my previous post.

Eric
I seem to go through the parts I listed more often than new frames, gears and for the landing gear boil it for 5 min it will take as much abuse as a gorilla gear ( of which I have broken 2)

Sorry about the title of the thread, that's why I always read the question in the firs post!

Maybe your not a intermediate beginner ...
The Crash reports about the Protos were aimed at the weakness of the frames, something that will also break on a T-rex500 when it goes in head first from 50 Ft.
I stripped some gears, not to many landing gears, but some guys need a lot of them...
That's why the gorilla gear was praised on Helifreak i believe..
This heli was made by the inventor of the Gorilla gear.
I also read the first post, and reacted to that.
But other posts, not only on this board, seem to have a certain colour to it.
And Imho that's not doing the MSH Protos right.
It's a very nice looking, affordable, high quality, well performing 500 class RC helicopter.
Maybe not suited for a absolute beginner, but very well suited for someone who wants to fly "something else" but cannot or don't want to afford a Logo or a Avant or any other high performance RC heli as their next heli.
A t-rex 500 is also high performance but definitely different than the Protos...
And that's what I'm curious about.
You should try Protos, I should try T-rex I guess

Eric

Stop over some morning around 7:00 AM and I'll fly your Protos and you fly my TREX 500. Sounds like fun!

Beginner? LOL get yourself a Hurricane 550! Its bigger, smoother, cheaper and much more stable than both, forget about the $100+ every crash as its only going to be around $40 each time you auger the Hurricane. Crash all you want!

That would indeed be a dream come true
Have been in Florida when i was a lot younger, but i definitely will come back to visit the other states when I'm a bit older, I'll make sure to pack my RC gear that time!!.

Guys I've been looking at getting the protos for some time now..... I like the design...
but is the frame really that fragile? my time is worth more than the cost of the frame and don't want to have to spend it replacing frames, if I take a small dive into the dirt.
I crash rarely and would be in the intermediate skill category.... you know usual stuff inverted backwards flight, tail down outside funnels, loops, flips rolls, you know your usual intermediate
I've been trying to decide whether to get the protos or wait for the logo 400
but can't find any specs on the weight of the 400.
I don't want a trex. Every man and his dog has a trex at our club, just like the raptor 90.
Good helis both of them, but they just don't appeal to me.
Any input would be good!

I crashed her once from 15 Ft. landing on the side.
Frame was just fine.
Had to replace blades, shaft, feathering, flybar, canopy, and upper bearing.
And if you really want a stiffer frame, infinity hobbies come out with carbon frames soon.

That brings us back to the point for most crashes this heli is more expensive than the Trex 500 to maintain! You would think that they might use some of the gorilla plastic for the frames if it was really that durable!

Would be funny to see the frame bend like a gorillagear in flight

So no more than the usual then, thanks Eric.
I just saw the pics on runryder and what one of the heli nuts at my lhs told me about the frames fragility and was kinda turned off. (He did say in its defence that it handles way better than a trex-500 and he has flown just about everything there is on the market, I've also seen him fly, so I have no reason to dispute.)
I suppose you could try boiling the frame.. like they do with the trex landing gear....
might be to flexible afterwards and things wont fit......
I'm not really worried about parts cost..... I just don't want to spend forever fixing it!
And I REALLY REALLY DON'T want a TREX.
I might wait for the Logo 400 or the carbon frame. Carbon frames would probably be out before my first crash anyhoo....

Carlo

Believe me it will bend...
The gear is strong because it's a very flexible plastic compound.
The last thing you want is a flexible frame, that's why it's constructed with a 30% carbon blend.

You just have not crashed it properly. I crashed mine and it was a crash no different than what cost me 20.00 on my 450 and it cost over 200.00 to repair. You cannot compare one crash to the next. I put my 450 in inverted and I needed all new servos, blades, tailboom, main gear, main shaft, belt, canopy and flybar. So is your T-rex 500 stronger than the 450? Not really. Well actually, the 450 is obviously a lot lighter and probably why crashes are less. T-rex 500 crashes are disapointing and in some ways to me a pain to rebuild. A few weeks ago, my 450 droped from 20 fee on its side (a crash I have done before resulting in damage). I picked it up, put it on the skids and flew 3 more packs! Ya never know!!

The few dollars difference you stated between some of the parts is made up here in the difference in price in the canopies. About 11.00 cheaper for the Protus. Seems like a wash.
