An old Aussie Noob
Have been building model aircraft and boats since I was about 8 years old back in 1945 . Bought my grandson a coaxial Twister about 4 years ago and have enjoyed flying with him as well as rebuilding it many times.
Bought Phoenix sim a few months ago and have enjoyed it so much that I have decide its time to get real, while I still can ! Trying to make my mind up between Trex 250 and T-tex450 or similar clone. The smaller one would be more suited to use in our garden but I am only 5 mins away from the Lilydale RC flying field so that is not a limiting factor. Think big might be better any suggestions welcome .. Paddy |

Welcome Paddy to HeliFreak. Between the two, I'm a 450 kind of guy. I know alot of others will say mCPX, but I like the size and feel of a bigger heli. I wish now that I had started with a 450. You are right on target with the sim, just keep on it. I wish you good luck and if you decide to go the clone route, PM me and I can tell you what I have built.

Howyagoin paddy? I don't think a 250 is the go here. A 250 is a real little screamer and can be a bear to fly, They are a bit of a contradiction in that the perception is that they suit a noob..., they don't..! It generaly takes a fair bit of experience in RC helis to get 'em to fly IMO, and keep them under control. A real PITA at times.
A 450 is a much better proposition and is easier to manage if you crash and far far easier to fly and fix IMO. The 250's are so microscopic that I had to buy special drivers to assemble the thing. The 450 size is very managable and you can buy bits anywhere and is easy on the wallet. If you can afford it go for a 'name' brand 450. Try to avoid the clones if you are starting out in RC helis, the cheaper clones can be a bit of a challenge to get right, but are cheap no doubt. Even the 'name' brand 450's are cheap to fix it's just the inital outlay that may be prohibitive. I started out on 450's and love 'em. They are a universal RC helicopter. I will be 63 next week and started RC helis about 6 years ago. I should have started when I was 20...! Go to the Algn 450 forum to 'see' what's what with 450's but it is is up to you. Good luck to you Paddy and welcome to the 'freak show.

Hi from Pakenham
Im new into flying helicopters as well although I played with control line models years ago. Im 63 and got a coaxial for christmas last, then a mSRX and currently a Walkera v00d02. The RC Garage in Boronia on Dorset Rd stocks Eflite and has a good supply of parts and help. http://www.rcgarage.com/

Thanks for info Neil, I am heading down to RC garage this morning, their prices are as good as any I have seen on line .
Think I am going for a mCPX BNF and a Blade 450 3d RTF which includes DX6 control. As they say time is short must hurry along ! |

Welcome to the game Paddy. Try to get as much info as possible on "taming" the helis. Various settings in the Transmitter can help a lot, and on my first 450 (TRex) I put extra weights on the flybar. How are you with electrical stuff and computers? I am a young thing (just turned 60) but found the 450 even quite a handful and nearly gave up; then I decided to splash out for a SK720 FBL controller with self leveling and never looked back. But I know opinions differ a lot on the wisdom of starting out with electronic stabilisation vs flybars.
