Default Motor pinion set up

Hi
Hi folks

I've been watching the Finless's 600 series of videos in preparation for building a 450 (I think) and I have a small question about the motor and pinion video. In it he describes finding the high spot and low spot on the main gear. Which plane is he referring to? Although exagerated does he mean that the imperfections in the profile of the main gear and motor spindle mean that it is like a cam (which is what I think), or is it the other dimension he is talking about?

Also he mentions that at the low point there should be backlash and that there should still be a tiny amount of backlash at the highpoint. Is backlash the same as play? So for the high point he means that you should just be able to rotate the main gear a tiny amount without it turning the motor pinion?

Sorry for the basic questions, I just want to be sure I've understood correctly. Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Bill

the oblong gears are pretty much a thing of the past since the release of the 450SE V2. finless was referring to the 2006 version of the main 450 gears that were light blue. they were notoriously oblong. it was very difficult to find the sweet spot between loose enough on the tall side of the wheel not to burn up the motor and/or break the motor shaft, and tight enough not to jump teeth on the short side of the wheel.

with the dark blue gears of the V2 this has been a non-issue (for me at least)

as far as backlash, yes this is 'play'. i've always set it with a piece of notebook paper or printer paper. just cut a 1/4" strip about 5" long. while you are setting the mesh of the gears, just put the paper inbetween and set the mesh firmly so there is no play, and tighten down the screws. after you've set the mesh, confirm by turning the main gear to roll out the piece of notebook paper. if it comes out cleanly zig-zagged without cutting the paper, you're done.

Thanks, that's just what I was looking for.
