Default Phantom owner "demos" Phantom, crashes into camera crew...

Some guy just demo'd a Phantom on fox news. They asked him to turn around to show them in the Camera. Guess what? He lost orientation and crashed it right into the camera crew......

That was like watching Cessna ask a 7 year old to demo a 182 at MAKS

"This is why we need regulation!"

Fantastic.

"And that's why we need to have pilots, and that's why we need to have regulation"

Where's the AMA rep at this to discuss what's already in place? All the regulations in the world don't matter if no one pays attention to them. We need better knowledge and understanding. I wonder if Fox News even knows about AMA.

At least he didn't claim it was a "flyaway".

Maybe people will actually be able to see that the guy is simply an idiot.

Yeh, he said he's "not a drone pilot" AFTER he failed miserably at a nose in hover and nearly sliced up their camera man.

This is NOT Fox's fault, and for the record, I am not "pro" Fox news.

My head hurts..... Why exactly are we flying this indoors again? Maybe a smaller "Qx" with a camera would be more applicable here.

So fox should have had an experienced drone pilot,,fox`s bad there,,,Its up to fox news to ensure safety and they didn't,they asked a guy who cant even hover nose in,so that has to be their fault, not the poor guy who wanted to keep his boss happy.
is anyone who does not work there "pro fox news"

This is why I am not against the idea of getting a license.
Any of us on this forum who understand what we are doing, would surely pass, and the dumbasses who- because they read the manual- believe they are professional pilots will fail and nolonger give our hobby a bad name.
There is no way they can make a test that we can fail, only ones that a complete novice will fail.
Sadly, I believe it is the best way to let us fly, and the morons do something else.

Did`nt realise that not being able to fly a heli or quad qualifies you as a moron,,so that means we were all morons before we could fly!
The real morons here are fox news,,did they not want to pay a proper pilot?

"To be clear I am not a licensed drone pilot."

Wasn't aware there was such a thing.

You're looking at this the wrong way.

ANY regulation is bad. Licensing is bad. When the gov really wants to stop people from doing things they make it expensive. The test might not be hard at all, but the fee to take the test may be 2,000 dollars.

This tactic has been used before and will be used again.

Regulations wouldn't help here in the least just like the "regulations" did nothing to stop the Govt employee from flying his "quad copter" -
  • A) In a completely restricted No Fly Zone
  • B) Flying it at night in a densely populated area
  • C) Under the influence of alcohol.
  • D) Flying it in a densely populated area
You can't "Regulate" the stupid out of people and trust me when I say our government is trying to do just that. All the regulations in the world can't stop stupid from being stupid.

If he's not a "Drone Pilot" then he should not be flying one and especially not THAT one inside and so close to people. He needs a good *smack* up the side of his head to hopefully knock some sense into him.

The PILOT is the one at the controls regardless whether he is qualified or not and regardless of everything else that is the person ultimately responsible for safe flight of the aircraft.

This situation was a set-up for disaster from the get-go and Fox should have known better. For the record I am pro FOX but this was not very cool and I'm going to tell them about it as soon as I hit SEND at the end of this *rant*

It's the media. They have to sensationalize EVERYTHING. If it isn't deadly, it isn't news.

Could all of media's future "drone" interviews and questions please be directed to Bobby Watts please? Jeez!

Lucky the camera guys are a ok. That's all we would have needed......is to see a splatter of blood fly out from behind the camera as the machine struck someone.

You're assuming that those that fail the test will not fly… that's a bad assumption in my opinion. How many people drive with a suspended license for instance? A whole bunch! And even if you need a license to purchase a multi-rotor in the future, it won't make much of a difference as the idiots that want one will always be able to get their hands on one. (Online from overseas, used, etc.)

I don't think he's an idiot because he can't fly. I think he's an idiot because he knew he couldn't fly (he even stated to the reporter that he wasn't a pilot) and yet he figured it would be a good idea to fly it: 1. Inside where there wasn't enough room for his skill level. 2. In the vicinity of others, again especially when he knew he could't fully control it.
