Smile Progress + a couple issues

I think I'm getting over my nervousness slowly with every flight. My flybarred 400 is no comparison to the x5 as far as performance and precision in controls. My 400 never seemed very locked in, I was always too scared to try anything i've learned on the sim. But today on my last 2 batteries I decided to give it a try. I had sucessfully managed some tictocs .
Couple things that I noticed besides the scary sound this thing makes is that my motor was bogging down during the tictocs. Should I bump my motor PW from 8 up to 12 or raise my 95 flat throttle to 100? I also noticed the tail was blowing out to the right a little, not sure what to adjust on the vbar for that though.

Could be your running to low C rated packs for the type of flying your doing. There is also a new more powerful (and more efficient) motor that came out a couple weeks ago. it seems to have more grunt/power and gives longer flight times than the stock motor. its a little spendy though.

Didn't think about that.Guess i'll start saving for a good battery (45-65C?) or a motor.

My motto is, always get the highest C rating as you can afford. The higher the C rating the longer the batteries will last due to less strain on the packs during flight, as well as not getting as warm so you can charge them immediately after the flight instead of waiting.

Manufacturers always say to wait until the batt is ambient temp (or close to) before charging. the high C rated packs are stressed less therefore do not heat up as much. one would see a lot more cycles out of a 45 or 65C pack than one would out of a 25 or 35C pack, no matter how you fly. This recoups the extra cost on the higher C packs over time.

Also, what ever the C rating is for the pack it's best the burst rate is around double the constant, this will put much less stress on the pack at the end of your flight when voltage is lower and the pack still needs to put out higher amperage. it will also allow for the headspeed to stay more constant toward the end of the flight when most low burst batts would bog. It will help your gov work better at the end of the flight as well.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info, will keep that in mind. I moved my throttle to 100% flat, and my motor is pretty warm to the touch. Not sure how hot is too hot.

Scorpion motors are rated higher for heat than most other motors. they can take almost 400 degrees F. so if your under 200 your fine.. ALIGN motors run about the same temps as scorpion but they are rated to about half of the scorpion, so they don't last long comparatively speaking. My old HK 4035-500 in my 700E used to run around 190-200, never had problem. I went to the new HKIII 4035-500 and it runs about 30 degrees cooler. I cooked my 700 align motor in 20 flights, it was running around the same temps. Scorpions are just made so much better and with better materials, they can take a lot of abuse.

Good to know, you are full of useful knowledge akamullen (THANKYOU) . I doubt its getting 200*F so i'm good. I'll have to bring my temp gun home from work and test it to know for sure.

Just flew 2 batts at the AMA and . I had plenty of room to mess around (only one out there), this bird flys just like a sim now that I've got it tuned. I think raising my throttle % helped with my bogging.
It has such a nice presence in the air, I don't think i'm lookin' back at the 400 class.

Your sig says vbar governed. Is it not? If so, I found that I had to up the collective and aileron precomp a bit after some test flights this weekend. Then did a re-maiden today.. 6 packs, and tic tocs were super snappy!!

It is governened at 2400rpm, I'm still learning with the vbar. Whats your collective & aileron precomp settings llbr22? Since yours is snappy maybe I could see if that helps mine.

I'm not in front of it right now, it I believe I bumped each setting by 10 and it made feel juuuust right. Per the vbar software, those settings aren't overly sensitive so you can change them by 5 or 10 and it won't over due it.

So I say give it shot and let us know what you think.

I'll just keep bumping the numbers up till it feels right. Have to give it a try tomorrow after work. Thanks for the tip .
