E-flite speed controls are great but...
So I've had an E-flite 40a pro-lite ESC on my 400 for several months now. Great stuff.
The problem is the ESC programming link has a serial interface. In other words its a rs232 link. Only desktop computers seem to have these things and since I have only a notebook I end up going to the local library with my lipo-motor-esc and programmer every time I want to change something in my setup. Good thing they know me with all that beeping in my lap. Someone recently asked me where to get the rs232 link. Almost nobody has them and I eventually found one in stock in canada. Seems horizon has discontinued the thing with no plans to make a USB based replacement. That would make too much sense I guess. And I know I could just do the programming with the Tx. But counting beeps and pauses is too much like work. So if your looking for a 400/450 size ESC capable of 6s get the CC Ice lite 50. |

Why not get a USB to DB9 adaptor? It's $11. Alot cheaper than having to drive to the library with gas prices these days.

Here's one for $12 with free shipping, and comes with a DB9 to DB25 adaptor.

Thanks for the links guys. Looks like another little thingy I gotta buy.
The cheapie I bought off of fleabay is designed for win95/98/me. I could not get it to work and I know how to use compatibility settings. I am fairly computer literate too, I think it was just a piece of junk. I tried drivers from the website and at least half a dozen drivers from Cnet.com. Nothing worked. Oh well. |

kavic,
Did you intend for this to be in OT? If not, I can move it for you.

If you think this thread works better somewhere else, go ahead and move it.
I guess my point that E-flite dropped the ball by discontinuing its ESC programmer and not replacing it got lost a bit. I sent Horizon Hobby an email and they replied that no update is planned. Having to count beeps and move the throttle stick is yesterdays tech. I just sent E-flite another inquiry with a link to this thread. Maybe I'm missing something. |

They've taken a step forward and left the old in the dust.
You'd probibly be happier with the data logging in an ICE controller anyways Serial control is positively archaic these days.

But they didnt take a step forward. They discontinued the ESC programmer and have no plans for a replacement.

Either that, or the demand wasn't there. Companies can't continue making parts or accessories forever. It's a $30 speed controller... time to just suck it up and move on. It sucks, but hey... that's the life of a R/C Hobbyist!
