Default Sun glasses ??

was curious how many here wear em during flight, was out today, and whats ya know, it was actually sunny out, to the point where I was squinting, which of coarse made it a wee bit more difficult to keep things in perspective. I didn't have time to hunt down the shades and this got me thinking Hmm. wonder if it will make it harder to not get disorinated?

I have been flying for years with Oakley polorized lenses and they are great. I just bought a pair of Flak Jackets in rootbeer and there is very little difference in the color of the view but no glare and eyes wide open. I bought them to fly a diamond da20 when I was getting my pilots lisence but now use them everyday

I have a stigmatism and anything in front of my eyes bothers me. My first FF I lost the heli in the sun and when I found it it was up side down in a tree I now make sure the sun is to my back and I keep the heli in front

I have sunglasses on any time its even remotely sunny.....got blessed with 20/10 vision and id like to keep it as long as possible...so thats a big YES for me lol....a hat helps as well

dont get the normal "black tint" thought.....look for a a quality pair of polarized sunglasses with the "yellow" tint.....kinda like shooting glasses ya know?...the lighter color lenses actually help to brighten things up.....even on cloudy/overcast days

I always wear polarized when there's glare out in case my heli gets blown into the sun, you never know. Flourescent stickers also help with orientation if it goes out too far or in low light situations.

I just had this discussion with an eye doctor on Friday.
I asked him about polarized glasses when flying because that's what I use for flyfishing.

He said polarized glasses are not recommended unless you are actually dealing with polarized light. You only get polarized light when the the light rays bounce and reflect off of something smooth and shiney like water or glass. Even snow does not polarize reflected light. He also added that using polarized lenses when not in a polarized light condition can cause ghost images around objects.

So the advice of this doctor was not to wear polarized glasses when flying. Just use high quality, UV filtering, tinted lenses.

We get 300+ days of bright sun and no clouds here. I wear sunglasses almost every day and flying has been no exception.

I've tried high quality polarized glasses, my everyday Oakleys and cheap tinted aviator glasses.
IMO the cheap aviator glasses work best for flying (they have the most peripheral coverage), then the Oakleys and lastly the polarized glasses.
My recent conversation with the eye Dr. seems to confirm my findings.

i wear ploarized lenses in all sorts of conditions from low light to bright light, and ive never had a problem with ghost images......also last tim i check my heli sure had alot of smooth shiny surfaces....be careful with cheap sunglasses!!!!...they actully do more harm than good by fooling you into thinking that your filtering uv rays...

..... theres two things a R/C pilot must always be vigilant with, his eyes and hands!

Hi,

I found this on an academic website:

Quote
Most light sources are unpolarized except for
  • sunlight reflected off water (as above).
  • the blue sky (hold two polarizers side by side at 90° to each other. Rotate the pair and compare the variations in transmitted intensity.)
  • lasers. If you have a laser pointer, aim the laser at a wall or paper, place the polarizer over the laser head and rotate it. In one orientation the beam intensity almost vanishes.
End of quote (source: http://acept.asu.edu/PiN/act/color/color.shtml)

Did you doctor assume overcast sky?

Thank you,
Frank

I don't think so, since it's almost always clear here...except when it's snowing and we get very little rain in the summer.

I'm just relating what he said and my experiences.

I wear polarized glasses when fishing and started using them first when flying.
Then I tried high dollar Oakleys and they seemed better but were a little dark.
Went with the aviator and that's what I use now.

I'll probably sound like a safety freak, but I wear safety glasses when I am not wearing sunglasses. I'm really paranoid about messing my eyes up.

Bottom line is everyone has different eyes and different conditions.
So whatever works for what you got...squinting should probably be at the bottom of the list.
