Default DT700 almost maiden disaster....help

So I went to do a hover/trim maiden today on the DT700 and after about 30 seconds in the air the tail started to no hold. Put her down and found one of my tail drive gears GONE!!!!
It's like it disintegrated. That's a first for me. Luckily it didn't cause a crash. So what the heck could have caused that?

That's a really good question. My first thought is the gear was defective from the start, had some damage then just broke in half. How was the mesh prior to the flight? One tell tale thing that the gear was broken at the start is the plastic sleeve DT puts on the shaft of the gear to make sure the pin doesn't fly out is still there. This is really odd.

Mesh was smooth. No damage prior. This was the very first flight.

I guess by process of elimination..
  1. If this isnt a common failure on this heli then a inherent design/manufacturing issue can be ruled out.
  2. If you are sure that it was assembled correctly and running smoothly with the TT and tail free to spin without binding then build error is ruled out.

So that only leaves the possibility of a 'freak' faulty component.. No?

Yep, tail was smooth with no signs of binding. I took even extra time on my pre-flight checks since this was the first official maiden. Screw checks, servo checks ect. Spooled her up fine, was about 10-12 feet off the deck and I noticed the tail started really drifting. Immediately put her down and found this. The tail had just enough spin on her that I was able to land her. If I had waited a few seconds longer it would have had a piro of death. The only thing I'm wondering is DTs bevel gear adjustment. This is the first line I've ever seen with that adjustment. As I was told prior to me attempting to fly her, I made sure that little needle screw was nice and tight. Other than that I just don't know

The pinning screw for the adjustment has to be thread locked. Just making it tight is not enough. We had folks on the team have the screw back out, but never had this result. My guess is that the gear had a defect that was not visible to the naked eye; these things happen. Unfortunately, it had to happen to you.

Sorry to hear this Dennis but glad you got her down in one piece.

Was the remaining gear damaged at all?

Did you find any parts of the gear that ejected?

From your pick it looks to me there is no damage on the other gear. Which leads me to believe this was a freak accident. If so, put in a new one and you should be good to go.

Wow really???!!!! Thank you VERY much!!!
I'll send an email shortly for certain.
And no, I couldn't find the ejected pieces. I looked for about an hour and couldn't find them. I was only hovering so looked in the general area and then expanded my search outward about 50 feet. Nothing......
The other gear that runs on the autorotation gear showed no damage but the bevel/umbrella gear for the TT does have a couple teeth that got slightly hit. Yeah, no damage to heli except in the pic. The second I noticed the tail not holding I put her down. The tail had just enough spin left on her for a safe landing. If I'd waited a couple seconds longer I'm sure I'd have had different results

It does sound like a defect in the gear. Shannon takes good care of his customers.

Can't argue with that. Shannon and all of DT staff and pilots have been great. Even bought a few used kits off some team members for a great price.
