Default Heli or multi rotor?

So I don't have anybody else to talk to about this so thought I'd post it here. I have a trex 450 sport that have been flying off and on for about 3 years. but I honestly don't use it very often. I don't have alot of time to go fly by myself and frenkly it scares me everytime I do fly it. I have read some things that most people are less intimedated by quads then they are of helis. I just don't know what to do. quad or my 450 sport. the 450 just sits there most of the time and I fly my foamy planes mostly. I think is has to do with the feeling like I don't have full control of the heli. even though I do. I just keep getting the fear that it's gonna get out of control or somthing will fail and I'm gonna hit myself or my family.

If anybdy wants to chime in please do. I know only I can decide but I would like to hear what sombody else has to say.

thanks

A multi for sure in your case.

I love flying them and they are fast and super stable...Let go of the stick and it just hangs there indefinitely.

Some of them even land automatically and return home by themselves if you lose radio signal or simply turn the radio off.

If your feeling intimidated by the 450 by the feeling of "not having control" perhaps a sim may be the cure, or getting out and flying it more often to become accustomed to it.

A quad is a bit more stable and has its place, but I would think you'll become bored with it in a short time

++++1
Only way to overcome it is to just get out and fly it more often.
Sim helps a lot too

I do have a sim. I use the clearveiw with a gws usb cable and fly with my dx7. I'm fine on the sim cn hover in all oriantations and have full control. I don't do any 3d maybe the ocasional flip roll or practice inverted hovering. I don't fly backwards or anything like that really more scale flying then anything. but I have control I don't crash or dumb thumb on the sim.

but when I spool up the 450 my fore arms tighten I forget to breath and just get super nervous that somthings gonna happen.

for some reason the thought of 4 spinning 8 inch props just feels less harmful them a spining 24 inch main rotor. not to mention if I crash it the repair cost is way less.

I would build my quad. so it would be on the cheap.

thanks for your reply. I have been watching your videos for ever and have been a great inspiration btw.

A quad is a bit more stable?
It will hover hands free as long as you want it to.

The Naza with GPS has position hold and altitude hold and will sit there for hours.

This is the cheapest version with NO GPS.....

Does it look a bit more stable than a 450?

You can also use the battery from your 450 for close to 20 minute flights.

As with all things in this hobby.....

Fly what you feel comfortable with
This is a hobby that is meant to be enjoyed not stressed over.

The only limitations to this hobby is the ones you put on yourself

I do need to fly it more. I know that would help. I keep trying to find the time but always have an excuse. plus I'm down to one battery. see more excuses. It's like I'm fighting with myself. I want to fly it but always find a reason I can't but the thought of selling it kinda breaks my heart. I know that I can always buy another one down the road but this was my first.

you guys probly think I'm nutz. and maybe I am a little lol

If I had more funds I would just build the quad and keep the heli but things are kinda tight so I do alot of sell this to buy that to keep my hobby going. and I have this heli sitting there doing nothing and I have wanted to build a quad for a god amount of time. Maybe I should just sit tight save up and build the quad before I sell the heli. ro make a decision.

I'm driving myself crazy right now lol

thanks for all your input guys.
this forum is what got me into helis to begin with.

IMHO...Take your time, save your pennies for what you want and never make hasty choices.

You can get the quad frame and motors and ESCs at Hobby King for dirt cheap and the NAZA controller is all you'd have to spend money on.

Four motors,ESCs and the frame from HK would run you about $120.
You have the battery.
You have the receiver.
You have the radio.
The Naza is about $240.

You can do a killer quad for under $400.

This is the HK frame I would use for $11.

keep thinging that the quad with it's superior stability will help me get over the out control feeling with the heli and eventually I'll feel more comfortable. idk. I sure do love flying my foamy scratch built plane right now.

just gonna have to think about this alot more.

I agree this is suposed to fun not stressful lol

It flies like a heli or put it in care free mode and left is always left and right is always right....No matter where the nose is pointed...Push the cyclic up and it moves the quad away from you...Pull it back and it comes back....Move the cyclic right and the quad moves to your right...Doesn't matter if it's nose in or side in or whatever.

You need the GPS for that feature...It's another $130 or so.

Care free mode is good for on board cameras.
Also for lighted night flights.

Leave the quad in heli mode and it will help your confidence a ton.
Same as me and my MCP X helps me with my 700.

Maybe an MCP X would be a cheaper solution for you?

thats pretty sweet I was gonna make the H frame that rctest flight did but this is pretty sweet and for 11 bucks seems cool. I would use the kk2 board with the lcd screen on it probly. use the higher 1100kv motors with smaller 8inch props. I could build my quad for less the 150 bucks. I would be stable and get me a good taste for If I would like it better.

Sounds good and cheap.

programming some of the cheaper control boards can be a headache but I know nothing about KK boards.

The motors and ESCs at Hobby King are cheap too.
Like $12 a motor and $15-$20 an ESC.

The motors,ESCs and frame doesn't have to be expensive but I'd spend money for a good control board.

thought about that too. and honestly I'd probly get a micro bird and build a quad.

I think that would help.

thats really a great idea.
