Default A horrible lipo accident this weekend

Hoped to never be posting here but I must share my horrible mistake.
Friday I was cleaning up my workshop. My little boy was tinkering with an airframe I had on the tool cart next to me so I set it down on the floor for him My biggest fear was his fingers getting punched in the main gear or something. As I cleaned the bench I set a 12S battery tray on the tool cart. Next thing I know there is a loud arcing noise and a pop. My sons focus switched from the airframe to the new thing on the cart and he somehow touched the positive and negative wires together. i turned to see smoke and his hands covered in black soot His little fingers got burnt from the arc. Thank God it wasn't worse I know it could have been. I can only imagine what would have happened if he had made a solid connection.

I hope he didn't get burnt too bad. It seems like little ones can get into stuff and do things you never even thought about and it happens sooo fast! Mine will find the most dangerous thing around, and then mess with it!

Same thing happen to my son. I was using 5.5mm connectors that did not have a outer case and black and red wires are loose and separated. He actually climb to reach for the batts left on the wall shelf and touch the red to the black. The connector melted instanteously and of course from that day onwards my wife was not very pleased with me putting batts in the house.

Yep, those are the connectors I had. I took him to the emergency room immediately. He ended up having to have surgery on his hand that night.
We brought him home from the hospital yasterday and all is well so far. Surgeon said it didn't damage the tissue. But he did have to remove the skin. Luckily the flash was quick so the heat didn't soak in.
Talk about feeling like a horrible parent.

Thanks for sharing this....we love our children so much that it hurts us so badly when they get hurt. Don't beat yourself up over this, it's part of the parenting thing.

My 5 year old stuck a 6S balance tap into the 4S charge board when I my back was turned. The tiny pop scared her away.

I felt sooo bad...

Best wishes your way.

I had a similar incident with an e-bike battery. My 2 year old at the time grabbed two leads and arched them together. 36 volts. Luckily any finger burns were very superficial. I felt terrible, and it happened practically under my nose.

Glad he's doing well. Luckily, children are very resilient. Your story is a good reminder to always be on guard with children present, even when the helicopter is not flying.

Exactly, I got far too comfortable. I always keep the tools and other hazzardous items locked up or out of reach. Time to re-evaluate what is safe..

Scary stuff.
My son, 5 at the time connected + to - on my 6S 5000 w/ XT150 connectors.
Luckily they are a shielded bullet and the arc was contained. It let out a good snap and scared him off but it took me a couple seconds to clue what was happening right next to me. Now when I am working on a machine with the kids in the room all sharps and packs are pushed to the back of the counter.

Kid was fine and pack was oK too. All my packs are stored in a tool chest in the garage or an ammo can on the bench to difficult for little fingers to open.

Thats one cute little guy you've got there! If it makes you feel any better, I've got four little kiddies and I count high enough to keep track of the dumb stuff I've done as a parent. Thank god he's ok!!
