Default Dumb mistake = dead Jive

Like an idiot I wasn't paying attention today and touched my lipo EC5 backwards to my Jive. The result was a nice spark and a dead Jive. The BEC still works but all I get is the 7 LED flashes. I did some research and apparently the Jive is not repairable. Since it's less than a month old I sent Ready Heli an email but they said reverse polarity is not covered. In reading the older threads it seemed Kontronik replaced a few for others. Is it worth sending it to them and hoping for a miracle or should I try to open it up and repair it myself?

nope not worth it they will bill you and give you a small discount, which would probably still be more than what you paid for it at you lhs. But here's the good news, it's fixable, the cover has been removed by some and ifyou can get an electronics guru to find and replace the reverse polarity thingy (I'm not an e_guru) , maybe Tom can jump in here.
How on earth did you get ec5 reversed ?!

Jump..

It's not necessary to replace that "thingy", to remove the cover. There's a procedure to bypass it. This is for internal (K) test procedures to be able to analyze the health status of the other components for forensics. The "thingy" is there to prevent further startup, - to prevent a possible magical lighting after a polarity reversal.

But the procedure is a secret that I know to keep. Sorry.

In other words: It may be unhealthy to simply replace/remove that thingy because other components, mainly FETs, may be damaged.

Account the loss as an experience. It hurts, sure..

Tom

In other words get an e- guru to try fix it rather than bin it as you have nothing to loose right?. At least that's what i would have done! Now Tom what's the name of that thingy uhum.. !

They got you with the "thingy" Stolla, right?

I think, the thingy is a small popped relay, which can only be reset by Kontronik.
Or Tom. . .
But he has a certain relationship with Kontronik, which he understandably would not jeopardize for us.

It was my mistake but if it is possible to test the ESC and then reset the relay I think Kontroniks should offer that as an option.

I've got to ask, and now seems like as good a time as any... Why aren't our jives and helijives repairable?

They cost quite a bit, and one mistake turns it into a paperweight. An ugly-colored paperweight moreover.

Relay... Electrician?

It is a burnt bride with two short legs, called the anode and cathode.

But: Nobody knows what will happen if the power FETs will be driven.

And: Ever stripped a JIVE? Have fun! Watch out for your fingers when you work with the cutter. Usually something else is broken when undressing.

I tried working on some marine electronics from my boats electric , remote controlled trolling motor that were embedded into a polymer substrate. It was very frustrating and difficult. These were controls that had to keep salt water and the elements out for years of use on the ocean.

By the time I had carved and whittled all of the matrix material out of the way I had probably damaged every wire and part involved.
I dont get why the electronics are buried in a block of plastic in thse controllers. The would run cooler if the boards were exposed

I just received a new heli Jive this afternoon as well as a pyro 700 52-L to tr and get my Compass 7HV up in the air..Im almost afraid to program the thing after my experience with the powerJive last weekend. I hope to find out if it is alive soon. I hope so.

Don't worry James. It'll all work perfectly this time.

Perhaps this is why Kontronik have gone away from moulded poly in their new line of Kosmik ESC's. Lugs for leads to connect to and an aluminium box that can be opened and help with cooling.

For those that don't know yet here's a picture

Some thingy's are bigger than others but I've never even seen one so wouldn't know what to look for, I just know they are hard to find?

Sure, if you put it an oven at 80C the plastic softens enough that you peel it off like peeling an orange. In tried this when the two caps were bent off in a prang. No avail though, even after soldering in two new ones the unit was in a terminal sulk. It seems KT want to protect their reputation even more than their ESC!
