Default More setup questions

OK, I'm getting really close to taking this heli to the field. I just realized tho that I have no idea how the CC Talon 90 is programmed. I've never owned a CC ESC before, so I'm brand new to these. I'm assuming I'll need a programmer for this? Do I want t o use the internal BEC? (I've seen arguments both for and against this). Do I just rely on the previous owners setup? Gonna do some reading at the CC website tonite...

The Talon does need to be programmed with the Castle Link. Do you know exactly how the ESC was set up by the previous owner? If not you should not try to spool up until you can look at the settings with a Castle Link. Your transmitter will need to be set up to match his ESC settings and you will need to set your throttle stick limits for your transmitter. The Talon is designed with a 9 amp continuous/20 amp peak BEC, have not heard any negatives about it other than some people have been adding an additional power lead similar to the BEC Pro because the connector is only rated for 5 amps. I use the CC Ice 100s on mine so I need the external BEC (BEC Pros).

Thanks Paul, I kinda figured as much. I'll take the long way to work tomorrow and stop at my LHS and pick up a link. I still have a lot to learn about these bigger heli' s and the electronics that go with them. I appreciate the info...

If you have any questions about setting up the ESC just post again or PM. We are all glad to help. Castle also has some good set up videos on you tube. Videos are not for the Talon but should apply.

OK, connected the link and here's what it was set at; Heli, simple governor mode, fixed end points, medium spool up rate, high head speed change rate,High motor start power, normal timing, forward direction, power on beep enabled,6v BEC... the rest is pretty self explanatory... so this means what exactly?

and yet one more question.. how freely should the head spin when the heli is just sitting on the bench? mine has a bit of resistance, not like the 450's that spin freely... Is that normal? All ther components spun free individually befor I assembled them...

With belt and main blades on or off? I get maybe 5 or 6 turns if I spin it fast by hand... but flying it will loosen things up.

What kv motor?

I use a 13T with the 1200kv Quantum motor.

Yeah.. there will be resistance. Once blades are on and you fly it some it gets pretty smooth. Nothing to worry about. Some say belts are even more efficient than torque tubes but only during flight.

12 or 13 should be good. Not 14.

I have a 14T pinion with my 1100 kv Castle motor using governor mode with my esc. I did have a 15T until I switched to the 129T Fusion 50 main gear.

Most everyone does... at least if they are being the nebwie stage. I would. CC gov is much better these days I hear. See the video I shared way up above for how to do it.

I was planning on it. Thanks for the video by the way, it was very helpful. It takes me a while to figure this programming stuff out, the 450's practically program themselves. In fact, my first heli was a Blade 400 and I didn't have to do any programming at all. In retrospect, I think that hurt me in the long run, not learning to program my TX from the start...
