Free canopy
The bottom of a plastic (not glass!) 20 oz soda pop bottle makes a strong and functional canopy. I trimmed it so the center dimple just clears the board by 1/8". I used a paper hole punch to make the holes for the arms and cut a U-shaped slot for the battery. The holes are a little big so to stop the arms from rattling in flight I wrapped one turn of felt moleskin around each arm. The canopy is slightly heavier than stock but I don't have a scale to measure the difference. Flight performance seems unaffected. Of course this canopy doesn't help with orientation but I use the propellers for orientation anyway.

I was told i should use the bottom of a foam cup or plastic cup so until i learned how to fly the quad I wouldn't destroy the OEM canopy. I didn't have any foam cups and i was about to do what you did and use the bottom of a bottle, until I looked over and saw my wife eating a cup of Del'monte peaches in the little single serve cups and had a aahh hhaa moment.
It really works great ! It doesn't look half bad for a freeby, and it really protects the board. it's just about indestructible, and it sits just a tad higher then the blades so when I do have a crash and it flips over it helps to protect the blades, although I am just guessing at that. I also added some red shrink wrap to the front 2 spars and added red to the 2 white blades ( top & bottom ) to help with the orientation when it gets a little high and farther away from me. not a perfect solution, but it does help. Can't tell any difference in flight either. Here are a couple of pics with the fruit cup canopy. Oh, and it's easy to get the battery in also.

Excellent ideas. I also heard that the clear plastic lids of a 'Quick Trip' slurrpy work well, already formed and ready to install (after the holes are made). Large hole in the top, but still protects the board. Actually, anything has to look better than the stock canopy!

I was talking with one of the LHS employees and he had vacuum formed his own body:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...589171&page=10 it's post #136. Has lights and all! That thread on rcgroups has a whole bunch of alternative covers... maybe we have some ideas here too? |

BigRHS, great idea, should be lighter than the pop bottle bottom. I used to gobble up Del Monte mandarin oranges in the same plastic cup. I'll have to pick up a pack.

They're a couple of very cool canopies that I seen over there that i would like to get. Have you guys seen these yet. here are links to where you can get them and I uploaded a couple of pics below showing what they look like. http://parkflyerplastics.com/cart/in...roducts_id=583 and http://parkflyerplastics.com/cart/in...d9fc132fdf1315 I would eventually like to get one of those, but after I get better at flying this thing. I don't do bad now, but still lose orientation at times and end up making a big mistake Quote:
I had seen several different free canopies made from different things, but I hadn't seen one made from the fruit or applesauce single cups ( I am sure there are plenty of people that have thought of it or use it now I just haven't seen it ) and i thought ........why not ? It seemed like a good size and is light and made from tough plastic !

I really like that and I think it would be great for inside. the only thing about it is the big hole on top. If you use it outside and have a crash, it could let dirt and debri maybe get to the board, but i think it looks good.

Well, I raided my wife's Tupper-ware to come up with the All American Tuppercanopy !
I was looking for something to put some cold cuts in after making a samich ( that's a sandwich to the Yankees on here...lol ) and i saw this and thought this could work. Now it seems like everything i look at i judge weather it would make a good canopy for the Q or not....lol But anyway, it's just one of those little oblong containers that has a lid ( she now has a extra lid for the others ) so I just cut it down to size and marked it and drilled some holes so I could mount it in either the x or + configuration and took a sharpie and colored the inside front red and the rear blue to help me with orientation. here are a couple of pics of the final outcome so let me have it and don't laugh to hard and hurt yourself....LOL I know it may look like a big pile of but i do think i like it better then the fruit cup canopy I had and until i find something aftermarket that really catches my eye and will last and not have to refinance my home to buy it, I will continue to try different things. Look out Tupperware !

Very Cool! I've been looking around myself for something to do to mine... just haven't found what catches my eye yet.

That is cool. I did a raid on the kitchen too and found a small Glad container and cut it down to fit. I plan on mounting a camera on top for video and I figured that would work out well... but the cool thing is at night it has a blue glow to it since the container is translucent!
