Default Main shaft removal - tight pins

I'm trying to replace my main shaft but both pins are really tight (I have the metal head version). I have already slightly damaged the plastic collar on the main gear while trying to get the lower pin out. It's about half way out now, but I'm worried about pulling on things too hard. Has anyone figured out a good way of getting the pins out without damaging anything? I thought of using heat, but I don't want to melt the plastic parts. Maybe some modified pliers would do the trick...

I use a nail and hammer... Light taps of the nail against the pin gets it moving and far enough on one side so that I can grab it with pliers.

Thanks Steve. I tried a hammer and nail, but no luck so far. The pin was already partway out - enough to grab with pliers - and I've now broken it off by trying to twist it (pulling with all my strength did nothing). It looks like punching it out with something is the only option left, but I don't know what to use. Maybe I just need a better nail.

... or a bigger hammer!

Do you have a nail set or nail punch? That would help. A thumbtack?

Haha!

I finally got them out... I had to cut a slot in the main gear so I could slide it up over the pin and out of the way. Then I used a hammer, nail, and pliers to get the lower pin out. After I slid the shaft out of the frame and I could lay it down on my bench it was relatively easy to get the upper pin out with a thumb tack and hammer.

Thanks for the tips :-)

Bit late now, but when you come to replace the pins you might notice the lower pin is tapered - very hard to see but roll it on a flat surface and you'll see which end is which.
Should be easy to remove with needle nose pliers, one jaw on the thin end of the pin, the other jaw on the central part of the gear on the other side right next to where the pin protrudes - squeeze gently and the pin should pop out - same technique for the upper pin - it's as easy as that

I've used the pin part of a thumb tack, a paper clip, and even a piece of wire. The pin is 1mm thick, so anything that is 1mm will work.

If you take care of them they last for ages, the pins on the FP models are the same, I've been flying mine for over a year and don't think I've ever had to replace one of these pins

I lost one of my tapered pins, it just fell out, so i used a needle and because needles are hardened you just snap the excess off.
